Ask me about USC social life

Very very insightful post. Thank you so much Fowora =)

What are the top fraternities? Also, is there any that you would not recommend? Thanks for all the great responses btw.

no worries man

ummm top fraternities? ill be unbiased and just say what stereotypically people say are like the top.

Sigma Chi, even if you don’t like them, a lot of people won’t disagree with them being a top house
SAE- they always remain solid as a top house, they usually have a good idea of what guys are coming in before the school year even starts.
Lambda- theryre kind of teetering right now. they were a top house like a year ago, but kind of had to deal with their fare share of scandal and whatever so now its kind of debatable if they are anymore
Phi Psi- they were kind of off the row a couple years ago, but came back in 2008, and then killed it fall 2009 to spring 2010 so now people consider them a top house
Pike- they were kind of a top house but now they dont have a house on the row, so thats about to hurt them a lot

aside from these houses, there are other ones like AEPI and TKE which may not be TOP houses, but they still have good followings and throw fun parties. Sigma Nu is also on the rise

I can’t say what house not to join, cuz it’s not my place really ya no. Every house has sick guys I guess, it’s just a matter of finding ones you connect the best with

How about intramural sports? Are you in any? If so, is it hard to get a team as a spring admit?

I myself am not on an intramural sports team and no it’s not specifically that hard to get on to one. It all just depends if your like decent or not. I had a friend who was a spring admit and played IM baseball, so it also depends on what season your sport is in

how easy is it to make friends if you’re not interested in rushing or sororities? is it easy to make friends in your classes? do most upperclassmen live near or on campus?

what about asian greek frats?

asian greek frats haze reallllly hard

yowza…how so? and why lol

Getting to USC and you’ll realize it’s very easy to make friends. It doesn’t initially seem that way only due to the fact that at the end of the day you really don’t know anyone that well. However, because everyone is in the same boat, it makes it heaps easier to socialize. It all comes down to how much you put yourself out there. If you make side conversation in class, the people from where you live, go out and get involved, you’ll be fine. It’s annoying when people complain about not finding any friends in college because

 1. No one is going to become your best friend over a day, give it like 2 weeks ha
 2. There is no sense of entitlement, how should you expect people to talk to you when you never talk to them. You know how you see someone and you’re like, oh hey, they seem cool, I wouldn’t mind talking to them, well chances are people think the same for you too. So INITIATE.

And it isnt like you have to be so focused on “i need to make friends, i need to make friends” just live life and it’ll happen

And yeah most upperclassmen live off campus, ranging from far to close, it all depends

I don’t know too too much about them, but I do have some friends in them who love it. It’s a community where the people are very loyal to it and feel a strong sense of family when they join. Maybe it’s not for everyone, but people definitely like being a part of it when they join. And in terms of hazing, there are certainly rumors they haze but I couldn’t tell you personally how true or untrue that is.

dainese - I’ve heard that asian greek frats haze hard because they aren’t under the same regulations as the frats in the IFC. My friends have told me rumors of hazing in asian frats at other schools… such as making pledges roll down rocky hills shirtless or putting lighter fluid on their faces and lighting them on fire (W T F right?). One of my friends in an asian frat at another school had to do pushups on his knuckles and elbows until he started bleeding. Scary, but I don’t think the asian frats at USC are THAT intense…

Do all of the “top frats” haze? If so what are like the worst things that you would have to do.

Hazing is “strictly” prohibited at USC. take that with a grain of salt

Jesus people, stop asking questions about hazing. It is soooo annoying. You will never know the truth about hazing because it is meant to be kept a secret. Every house is different, some haze harder than others, etc. That’s it. And no offense, but if you’re that worried about hazing, you’re not cut out for the “top” houses.

LOL nice post Greens. i’m not joining a frat, but your post sounds about right

How prevalent is drinking? I realize that some people will use alcohol regardless, but how difficult is it to find a group of friends who don’t use alcohol/drugs (or at least not frequently)?

Also, I come from a pretty small high school (~1200 students). Believe it or not, this year as a new student, I had difficult adjusting and making friends. Do you think USC’s social scene will be overwhelming for me, or is it usually pretty easy to make friends? (Not sure if this matters, but I’m not from CA, and I doubt I’d know anyone there.)

i didn’t know anyone coming in and it was easy to make friends. you just have to be open and go out and meet people. don’t just sit in your room with the door closed DO STUFF. and no you don’t have to drink and there are people who don’t. however, the drinkers tend to stand out more if you know what i mean so it seems like a ton of people do. yes, most people go out thursday nights and on the weekends, and tuesday if you’re greek. but you can go out and not drink, its just your personal choice.

Are the only parties with alcohol the greek parties?
