Dear all,
I was a college confidential user by a different username for several years, active user while I was in high school and then community college. After transferring to UC Berkeley (I only applied to UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UCD, was accepted to all) I stopped using the forums. I graduated and work in the SF Financial District (won't go into detail about what firm I am at) and can answer almost anything you could want to know about being successful in America, college, careers and the transfer process, what you need to do to get accepted, quirks of the essay, selecting majors, getting internships, jobs, interviewing... etc.

College confidential was a big help to me in getting to where I am today and I'm looking to give back now that I am in a position to do so.. feel free to post a question here, if things get too dense and your questions get lost, or you have several questions that require some dialog/back and forth feel free to email me.

I will graduate in July. For the failure in the National Graduate Entrance Examination,I have to think of a plan to study abroad.
Among the top 20 law school, which would you recommend for a LLM program?
I am female, 23 years old, and having a further plan for a JD in a fine law school and go back to China, maybe Hongkong.
Thanks a lot!!!

hello, I’m an international student studying Chinese in Beijing. I’m starting my last year of high school in September and will be graduating around May/June next year and i plan to go to university right after.

I intend to apply to a university in the US, but I’m really not sure how to do so. Should I start applying to the universities i want to go to, or should i wait until i get my graduation certificate? Can you tell me which university is best for me to go(i plan on taking biomedic)? and what should i prepare to apply to those universities, besides TOEFL scores?

and yes, i’m well aware that mainland china doesn’t hold SAT tests :(

Colleges in the US have different deadlines for applications. Usually the deadline is in January so you should start applying the fall. You will also need to take the SAT in Hong Kong and spaces are very limited so register early. You will also need essays, letters of recommendation from 2-3 teachers, school transcript and a resume.

and one more question, do i need to take entrance exams?
and i heard that if i apply by myself, and not with assistance, chances for me to get accepted is lower. that worries me, is that true?

I’m glad I can help in any way, blnkn12! ^_^

There are no entrance exams except for the SAT. There are placement exams that you take after you accept an offer from any university. Those exams don’t count against your grades. They are just to see what maths and English class you should be in. If you can, take AP courses and/or AP exams for college credit.

Personally, I don’t think anyone needs special assistance but you should have a few people read over your essays and resume to check for grammar/spelling. Colleges in the US are aware of those special services and do not look fondly on them b/c the admissions boards feel they do too much for students rather than allow students to do the work themselves.
