I know I just made a thread about this too, but I pretty desperately need this information- Do you know if T-Mobile gets any reception at Babson? I know you’ve like graduated and stuff but if you have any idea please let me know- Thank you
How is the atmosphere at Babson? Are students and staff friendly?
Our kid has been at Babson for his first semester. If you are interested, I can tell you more. Just a short summary, the students are very friendly there. The stuff is great, except for their English department, which has a bit of reverse racism and then protective to their abusing lecturers.
2019papa - How is the workload?
Hiiiii, I’m so happy to have been admitted to Babson. It’s 4 am here in my country Vietnam and I’m preventing myself from waking people up.
I want to ask you a question regarding Babson’s majors. If in my common app, I indicated Entrepreneurship as my first choice major and Accounting as my second choice major, but now i have changed my mind and want to study Accounting as my first choice major, can I email my counselor and tell him so? Is it acceptable?
2019Papa, You should really think twice about the nature of your (multiple) posts regarding reverse racism at Babson. You sound like an idiotic helicopter parent.
Congrats to mpthuytien on your ED acceptance! I’m surprised there aren’t more ED folks on here. I’d be interested in their stats–especially the domestic students. Thx.
Don’t worry! You don’t need to notify anyone at Babson…Babson has concentrations rather than majors and you don’t have to declare them in Freshman year! Congratulations it is a wonderful opportunity ahead for you!
@BillPilgrim @voyager24 Thank you very much
I’m suprised to though… Wondering why there are not many ED posts here…
Yo what kind of subject test scores are good to submit? Took Math 1 and 2, Literature, and Biology E
Thanks guys
Are there many, if any, students at Babson who’ve started their own business before attending - like in high school?
There are some…I would hazard a wild guess of about a dozen! The quality of the business would be important consideration.
It’s hard to believe that it now has been over a year since I graduated and became a Babson Alum. I just wanted to make a post to let those who are still looking at this thread know I am still active and periodically check for new questions. Please post any questions or concerns you may have about the school and hopefully I will help in any way I still can.
What’s the deal with the laptops they give us? It seems super nice, but what do I do with my mac that I have now? Is it weird to use the one they give us for classes and my own for personal? I don’t want to separate from it
Yes, the Babtop. Every student is given a leased Lenovo laptop for their schoolwork that is already included in their tuition. The laptops they provide are typically top of the line and almost every recent alum I am still in touch with has complained that the laptops they are given for their actual jobs after graduation are actually far older / worse models. After two years you are given an upgrade and then given the offer to buy the laptop from the school once you graduate, for a discounted price. There are a significant number of students who choose to buy their Babson laptop at graduation and keep using it years later, which I think just speaks the pretty high quality gear they give every student right away.
An added side benefit is that given almost everyone on campus is working on only two versions of the same laptop, the IT group has pretty much seen every issue you can imagine and can fix any issues pretty quickly. Plus at the end of the day if something is malfunctioning or just broken, you can just quickly swap out for a new one right their at IT (obviously for a small cost but still far cheaper and more convenient then having to deal with any other outside service).
You do not need to part with you Mac and there are a number of other students who never crack their Babson laptops open given their strong preference for a Mac. Eventually if you do take a statistics or modeling class you will probably switch over the to the Babson laptop given the higher level of Excel functionality. But for everything else, you should be just fine with your Mac.
Nice to see you back assisting potential students of Babson! How about a few sentences about yout post Babson experiences?
There are three observations I would say I’ve made about Babson / Babson alumni now having graduated (in no particular order and by no means the most important, but just what immediately comes to mind). I think I’ve touched on them a little in previous posts but they would be:
- The international network and level of international experience everyone has is just completely different from most of the other communities / networks at least I am a part of. For my first vacation now in the working world I decided to travel to the Middle East to go and visit Qatar (very safe and developed country, with the capital, Doha, being relatively similar to Dubai). Every time I would mention this trip to family, non-Babson friends, or co-workers; it was always a big shock, why in world would you go there? That can't be safe.. But literally every single Babson student / alumni I've mentioned it to has always been very interested with several either having been there themselves, have family in the area, or have another Babson friend that they know went there. There aren't too many places in the world where you won't have some level of connections from the network, which for me has been a tremendous plus and something I'm very glad to be a part of.
- If there is one thing the core curriculum does well it is accounting and just general comprehension of SEC filings. While that's not to say everyone coming out of Babson is an expert in these areas, in my experience folks from other schools had a more traditional accounting curriculum, whereas Babson incorporated direct SEC filings and real life examples all along the way. It's a small thing and maybe if you aren't in finance after school won't be the biggest deal, but I have definitely seen a difference. If you're going into finance, it can be tremendously beneficial to get as solid a foundation in accounting as possible and Babson recently added a class called Intermediate Accounting for Finance that I found to be very helpful for actual real world preparation (your co-workers may be perfectly fine sitting down to discuss how their markets work / how their business operates, but not too many are very excited to sit down to teach an accounting lesson, so the more of this you can knock out in school the better).
- The community / alumni network is at the smaller / medium size to where there are plenty of interesting people out there in very important and influential positions, yet the network isn't so big to where most folks would just end up ignoring your email trying to reach out or to where they are constantly hounded by students trying to get into their industry / company. Because the network is just the right size, if you reach out to most folks who simply went to Babson as well, I would be willing to argue you get a higher response rate and level of helpfulness than someone who is a part of a much much bigger school.
Happy to share my thoughts on other areas if folks are looking for something else.
Thanks Jacob ! Your commentary and insights about Babson are always informative. Happy to hear the post Babson experience has reflected many of your previous learning and other college values that you have made your own! A tribute to Both You and Babson!
What is the workload like at Babson? My advisor seems to be discouraging me and says all the students he knows who went to Babson said it was a very heavy workload and lots of pressure. Is that your experience?
I don’t believe this is an accurate picture of Babson and the workload and pressure related to its academic and professional curriculum. Babson has designed a program that helps insure students succeed. That they have accomplished this task is evidenced by the very high retention and graduation rates. The first year curriculum features a course …freshman seminar…that outlines the basic roadmap to a positive outcome in you Babson career. Also faculty are always their to assist students academically. If you meet the requirements of Babson and do a fair amount of studying and preparation you cand be confident in having a successful road to a Babson Batchelors degree. While Babson is a serious school it does not require Herculean study efforts and is not a “pressure cooker” or cut throat school.
