Obdeboondocks: i think you'll have to take more than 1 decal course to get 5 more units...the rate of filling up depends on what decal it is, but if it looks interesting to you it probably looks interesting to the other 20k students so be wary.

DECals come in a variety of unit flavors, but most are 2-3. Be aware that they can have a surprising amount of work sometimes! Like misterreach says, though, if it looks interesting to you, it probably looks interesting to the other students.

decal.org will have a list, constantly being updated through a couple weeks into the semester, of DECal courses. Using that, you can determine when the first meeting is, which, for 90% of the classes, you will need to attend in order to enroll. There are a handful of courses which give out CECs before classes start, but most will require your presence the first couple of times while they do their own determination thing to see who gets to stay and who gets CECs.

If you're relying on DECals to round out your unit requirements, have a couple back-ups and keep an eye on the website.

thanks mister and undecided. Got a follow up question for you, hope you're up for it: You know how the Fall Fee payments are due on August 15? What does that entail of and gimme a ballpark. I plan on taking 13 units and will live in a unit 3 triple if that helps. once again thanks!

The reason I'm asking is because my dad lost his job recently and I sent an appeal a week ago. They said a response would take about four weeks and my family wants to know if we should just take the loans this fall or cough up the cash up front, depending on how long the financial aid will take.

I don't pay and haven't lived in the dorms (I get enough financial aid between grants and loans to cover everything), but I know they will charge your fees ($2192) and at least one payment's worth of dorm + meal plan (I don't know, but I would guess at least another $2000 if not more). The other costs -- for books and other living expenses, etc. -- will be covered by you out-of-pocket. CARS will be assessed the campus fees + room & board, and everything else will come from you.

Does that make sense? Someone else might be able to give you more specific numbers.

Obdeboondocks: for a non financial aid student, you would have to pay the tuition for the semester (8k?), random student fees (<$500?), and the first monthly fee for housing (approx 1.2k with a standard double), but you should really call the financial aid office to get the best answer

Er, $4192, not $2192. Sorry about that!

The ~$8k number is the -year's- worth of "tuition" (fees). You will pay half that for Fall semester. There is no tuition + fees, it's just fees. UCs like to pretend they're tuition free. :p

You'll pay your portion of "Registration & Fees" (1/2 the yearly total) and your portion of "Housing, food & utilities" (apparently your first monthly fee). The rest of the fees on that list come from you and aren't billed to CARS. The distinction? You can swing the rest of it however you can make it, but you need to pay the fees on CARS or else you'll run into financial blocks (which turn into registration blocks, etc.).

For dorms, I remember something like a "Linen Chute". Does that mean we get routine linens in addition to the linens that we're supposed to bring?

Does bearfact actually register all the AP credits and give units for incoming freshmen to determine their education level in the fall or does bearfact do that in the spring?

castel: i think those linen chutes you're referring to are actually trash/recycle chutes. No one does any laundry for you. And you should have your own linens. I think they only provide during the summer sessions.

walkingcactus: bearfacts does register ap credits and i believe that date it will be in the system is noted in your myberkeleyapp.

Scores have not been loaded onto both myBerkeleyapp and Bearfacts. MyBerkeleyapp loaded my scores up a few weeks ago, but Bearfacts does not show my AP classes and credit.

MyBerkeleyapp:

Exam Name Score Test Date
AP AM GOV POL 3 05/08
AP AM HIST 4 05/07
AP BIOL 3 05/07
AP MATH AB 4 05/08

Bearfacts only has:

UNIVERSITY REQUIREMENTS
08-08 SUBJECT A REQUIRED
08-08 AMERICAN HISTORY REQT SATISFIED
08-08 AMERICAN INSTITUTION REQT SATISFIED
BERKELEY CAMPUS REQUIREMENTS
- AMERICAN CULTURES REQUIRED
SEMESTER CREDITS COMPLETED 0.0 UC GPA 0.000

Hopefully, Berkeley loads up the AP credits in a couple days or weeks.

Hm, My Subject A is Satisfied but my American History and American Inst. aren't satisfied. It must be different for everyone!

I took AP US History in high school, got a 720 on the US History SAT subject test, and a 4 on the AP US History Test (not to bragg b/c I know other people could have a 5 on the AP test and a 800 on the subject test). As I have illustrated, you could have fulfilled it through taking US History in high school, taking the AP test, or getting at least a 550 on the US History subject test.

Castel, you should check with Berkeley about that.

dont worry. my status is the same way. i called and checked cuz my status is the same way. they just havent updated everyones yet so dont worry too much about it.

Berkeley received my AP scores. If I calculated it right, my AP scores would give me a little more than 30 units of berkeley credit, yet my Education Level on BearFacts is still Freshman. Does anyone know when Berkeley will evaluate your class standing?

well in that case, they probably update those things monthly

Does anyone know if you can change your classes you signed up for during phase I in phase II?

To Chairman Meow, you can change your classes once your Phase II starts. Once Phase II starts, you are able to sign up for classes up to the limit of your college. Thus, if you decide there is a class you want to drop you signed up for on Phase I or if there is a discussion time change you want to do, you can do it during Phase II. If for some reason it doesn't work, you can always do it during adjustment period, which starts after you do your Phase II.

Ok, thanks. I was planning on changing to a different discussion time.

You can actually change your classes within your unit limit during Open Hours at any time. That means you can rearrange your 10.5 units at any point after your Phase I appointment and up until your Phase II appointment starts; after that, you can do this with all 20.5 pre-allowed units.

Open Hours: 7am - 8am, & 7pm - 12am M-F; 12pm - 12am Sat&Sun

Do we have four years to complete our L&S Breadth requirement? Or before we pick our major? Thanks
