What kind of program does the CS 61A class use? I know it's LISP but which piece of software does the class use? Does the class issue their own version?

it uses SCHEME with stk interpreter. They have a piece of software that you can download and install on your mac/windows XP (not vista as far as last semester). It will be on the course website somewhere. You can generally access the program through SSH Secure Shell, or VPN, but you will need a class login for that.

Do the dorms have bookcases? If not, where do you guys keep your textbooks?

Yes, you get a shelf with around 4 tiers. I don't know the dimensions exactly but the shelf was maybe around 4 ft tall. It's a decent size. Also, your desk comes with drawers.

Thanks misterreach, I found the program they used off of their summer session website, and it seems to be free download.

I'm sorry if this question was answered before...

I'm an incoming freshman and I was assigned a double in unit 3. I was just wondering if anybody knew how big the closets were... I wanted to know how much clothes I can bring. :) thank you so much!

Q: I can't decide whether to take CS 3L this semester or to directly go for CS 61A?

Hi, if all the discussion/lab sections are full but the lecture class is still open for a course, then would more discussion/lab sections be created.

20legend: take cs3 if you do not have any prior experience or your prior experience is a bit shaky. If you're in no rush it would be the best idea, cause when you get to cs61a youll have like 5 weeks to relax cause its all cs3 review.

walkingcactus: i believe for most clases, they will not.

misterreach, I had the same question as walkingcactus. I signed up for Math 1A, but the discussion sections are full. Thus, I had to put myself on the waitlist.

I've heard that more discussion sections could open up.

sugapeach:

I stayed in Unit 3 for orientation (Priestley hall) and provided they don't change things up, the closets are small. Incredibly small. Mine weren't built into the wall like Units 1 or 2... they were more like mini-dressers that had a 1.5-ft wide hanger space, a compartment for folded clothes (with a mirror on the door), and two drawers. It was all in all about 3 or 4 feet wide, 6-7 feet tall, and 2 ft deep, I think. Anyway, the point is that I will probably invest in some storage cubes--that's how small they are.

nhsharvard: with math there is a likely possibility, but don't hold it against me if i'm wrong. the math department makes an effort to accommodate the demand. (one reason you should sign up for math in phase 2, as long as you're flexible with discussion times) i've heard stories of people ~100 on the waiting list getting into the class. best of luck to you then.

Is it ok to schedule back to back classes where one is at Dwinelle and the other at Etcheverry? How long do you think it takes to walk between them?

it might be tough - the uphill walk is quite steep, but if you really hurry, you can make it.

definitely a tough walk since you have to go through the steep hills next to the asian studies library and on hearst. i think its possible to make it though

So I wanted to sign up for the CS61A course (Computer Science 61A P 001 LEC) and I got put on the wait list.

The online schedule says that "274 student(s) are enrolled, with a limit of 408 and 10 student(s) are on the waiting list, with a limit of 408."
Why am I on the waiting list if there're still 134 spots available? Are they reserved for declared CS majors?

The same thing happened with Math 1B:
"300 student(s) are enrolled, with a limit of 411 and 31 student(s) are on the waiting list, with a limit of 100."

I hate Telebears.

You're probably waitlisted for a discussion + lab for CS 61A right? If you're waitlisted for a section you'll be waitlisted for lecture too... just how the system works.

Same thing goes for math. Try switching to a section that isn't full and you'll be enrolled for lecture instead of waitlisted.

This is not the case with either Math 1B or CS61A (see ethancc2's answer, which is most likely the correct one for this case), but for OTHER classes when you see spaces available but are still put on the waitlist:

There is an option for professors (or the department) to set aside a certain number of spaces for particular cases of students. For example, an upper division English course could have 10 spaces set aside for seniors, 5 for juniors and sophomores, 5 for declared English majors in general, and 5 open slots. That means if you are a freshman undeclared, you will be competing for one of the 5 open slots. If they're taken, you end up on the waitlist, even if it looks like there are 20 open slots.

Be aware, also, that there are two methods of processing the waitlist: manual and automatic. On an automatic waitlist, as soon as a spot you're eligible for opens up, you'll be enrolled in the class (according to when you ended up on the waitlist -- consider it a numbered list where it pulls out the first eligible person on the list rather than going purely sequentially).

On a manual waitlist, either someone in the department office or the professor him/herself will decide who from the waitlist, if anyone, gets added to the class. This means that if a spot opens up, you will NOT automatically be added to the class -- be aware of this, because it DOES mean you can drop from the waitlist and enroll from the class (assuming you're eligible from the restrictions, ie, have the right class level, declared major, etc.).

I just wanted to elicit some thoughts from the elite student community of college confidential whether the course Statistics 21P taught by Purves is difficult or not? I have checked on rate my professor and it seemed as if many of the students came out a bit shell-shocked. As a freshmen aiming for Haas, I would like to know whether I kill myself now or in the next semester.

Hey all I have just polluted the UC transfers section with my posts and finally decided to alternate.

My question is on the "New students free home game deal". Is there any way I can choose seats with other friends starting out at Cal? Or will I have to sit with random peeps (got no problem with that either just curious).

OOh yeah also have to take five more units to be full-time and am probably going to take a Decal course. Which get filled up quick?
