Ask questions about Cal Berkeley here!

Hi, I am actually a Community College transfer student trying to decide whether to apply as a social welfare of psychology major.

What do any current CAL students know about the Social Welfare major? It seems to be discussed very little...

Apply as a psychology student!! Its a great program with lots of research opportunities [senior thesis project for honors in the major]. I am a current psychology major and its great [and not too hard like many hard science or engineering majors!]

I have some questions about move-in day.

I'm moving in on the 24th. So my plan is to drive from socal to berkeley... to move my stuff. then drive back to socal to catch a flight from ontario to oakland. I don't leave my car in berkeley.. so i gotta drive the car back to socal. I was wondering how long move-in takes if I get there the earliest (say right around 10 AM)? Also I see that there are move-in day activities.. they're none of them are required right? cause I plan on driving back asap back to socal after i finish moving in, so i can catch my flight.

2nd My flight wouldn't arrive to oakland until 10:20pm. Would the BART still be open so I can get to my dorm?

Thanks.

I think it'd be a lot easier if you and your parents drove up to Cal, and then they drove the car back. I'm guessing that's not an option huh? It would save you a plane ticket.

Yea, that isn't an option.. my mom would be too scared to drive back by herself.

BART doesn't stop running until midnight, so your Oakland flight is fine.

ok cool thanks for the quick reply. Now i gotta get my tickets. Still cant believe i'm gonna drive from socal to norcal and back to norcal then take the plane to norcal in one DAY! haha. woot. Looking forward to the 14 hour drive.

Can your parents ship some of your things to you instead? I would imagine that all you would need right away would be your clothes, sheets & blanket, a towel, and toiletries. It might be a lot cheaper than the cost of gas, too. As one who has driven from SF to LA many times, I can honestly say I think you are crazy to consider driving up and back in one day.

There has to be some kind of long term parking, maybe a few stops north of Berkeley on the BART? Where you can leave the car for a while and then do the southward trip and the northward flight a week or two after moving in?

It's got to be safer than the marathon you are planning, you won't miss any activities, and your folks will get a mini-visit from you after you have been gone awhile and they'll be happy too.

Labor day weekend is right after the first week so you have a 3 day weekend to drive back and stay a day and fly back or something.

alright thanks for the replies. I'll consider them.

...available at Oakland Airport for about $8 a day (it looks like you can book a spot online for cheaper rates).

two questions:
1. how does everyone manage to get back home for thanksgiving when we don't have the day off before thanksgiving?
2. is there a certain kind of laptop that berkeley requires?

1) Most people skip the day before the holiday so they can get home.

2) No. Anything will do, but Thinkpads are awesome!

thanks so much, castel!

kudos on the thinkpad suggestion castel!

I was talking about right now during summer.

Can somebody please comment on the IEOR program at Berkeley? Does it have a whole building for itself or just a floor? I heard it's a small department? What about it's student body and instructors? Anything will help. Thanks.

To the guy with the car issues:

Dude. Ditch your car somewhere that looks safe and populated. Suburban area near houses and such. Make sure there's a bus stop within walking distance so you can get to it. It's free.

^^ He'll have to park the car pretty damn far from campus since there's permit parking all around campus.

The parking restrictions extend all the way to Alcatraz (on southside) California (on westside) and Eunice (on Northside). Even then, those areas will always have street sweeping days when you can't park and the regular 'can't park a car for more than 72 hrs' without moving.
