Ask Questions about North Carolina State

Please note that “Ask Me” threads are not permitted on College Confidential, because they deter people from creating threads that get responses from multiple posters, or getting other points of view.

I am reopening this thread as a general questions thread, so that everyone feels free to ask or answer questions.

Thanks for re-instating the post!

Let’s start this back up again. Any questions?

I think I’ve read through all 14 pgs of this thread. It is very informative. Thanks for your responses.

I’ve been accepted to FYC, but I originally applied to Engineering (Chemical specifically). Can you CODA to Chemincal Engineeirng from FYC, or do you have to go through Engineering First Year as well? I expect to have credits from AP exams that could potentially get me out of Chem and Physics and Calc. Would going through FYC put me behind? I feel like I’m have way thru the common first year courses already.

I still haven’t made my final decision to attend NCSU, but it is my first choice. This is playing a part in the decision.

I am applying for fall admission 2015 and I have a few questions:

Should I apply FYC first major and Economics second major or switch them, because I’m an OOS URM/NA male and heard that FYC is easier to get into for EA but I did take summer business enrichment courses at OU and OSU as well as Georgetown

Does NCSU give a decent amount of need based aid

how hard is it for a OOS URM/NA male applying EA with a 3.2 GPA and 30 ACT/ 1950 to get into NCSU

Thanks for your help!

I have one low subsection for my SAT, 670 M 620 W, then 520 CR… I asked my dad if I could retake it and he told me I couldn’t take another standardized test… My question is, will this be a deal breaker? I feel like a 520 would raise concern with admissions, even though I think my English grades are sufficient… I have a 4.6 GPA w/ decent ECs… Thanks!

What happens with CODA when you are entering your freshman year with 60 or so credit hours? I will have credits for all classes necessary for CODA except E 101 and E 115 (which I am expecting to place out of). I want to start taking MAE classes my first semester that I am there, but will they let me if I have not technically completed all CODA requirements for entering ME or AE (undecided)? Maybe they will treat me as a sophomore entering the College of Engineering and I will be exempted from E 101? Does anyone have any idea?

Do you think I have a chance at state with 3.8 UW and 4.85 W GPA. SAT isn’t very good 1620, but I have pretty good extracurricular and I am in state. I’m in the top 10% of my class as well.

autoexec - ask the department directly. I would bet that you cannot take the MAE classes without E 101.

You don’t need E 101 to enroll in MAE classes.

There should still be some classes you could take before going into MAE. Diff Eq, calculus-based Statistics? Electives?

I haven’t been on this website in forever, but my last question on this forum was about Stat 101 with Ronald West and I’m happy to say I did great in that class! If anyone happens to take that class, Ronald West is a great teacher.

Hi there, I apologize if this has been asked and answered. What is the culture at NC State like? Is it NC’s version of VA Tech? I realize that the schools are in entirely different settings, but in terms of type of student, school, etc. - are they similar? Also, does NC State have an inferiority complex being in the shadow of both Duke and UNC?

My daughter was just accepted and is very excited about the possibility of attending - thanks in advance.

I’d say the culture at State is probably pretty similar to VT. Never really thought about it that way before. We visited both before S1 made a decision to attend NCSU. I am a Tech alum, and S1 seems to be having a similar experience to my own - assuming Tech has not changed much culturally in 25 years.

A far as an inferiority complex, there is not one, and there is no feeling of a shadow from Chapel Hill and Duke. If anything, I’d say the average student at State would wonder why anyone would want to attend Chapel Hill or Duke (of course maybe I’m a little biased too.

I was accepted at NC State and Chapel Hill for Spring 2015. I am thrilled to say that I am all registered for my classes and so excited to be attending NC State!!!

How is the water there? I live in a place where I can bathe in gallons of Dasani/spring water quality. I’m trying to decide if I should get a water filter (I don’t drink soda so water will be my primary drink).

Hi everyone!

Just wanted you to know that I was going to try and visit here more regularly to re-open this thread. I’m currently a Junior in Engineering and have a lot of information about student life I’ve gathered throughout the years!

Thanks for helping out. I was wondering what it is like to live in the Engineering dorm? How do I find a roommate?

What is it like to live in the honors dorms? How far is it from most of the first year engineering classes?

How many dining dollars would one need with the freedom pass?

Thanks!

coetzee - for the dining dollars, you don’t really need any with the freedom pass, and I wish State would stop making you buy $100 worth. My son went 2 years on the freedom pass any never used any.

My son loved the honors dorm - so much so - he’s returning with his same roommate to the same floor in the same hall. He made a great group of friends. They had a lot of fun. As first year engineering - your classes are all in that general vicinity. My son will have to bus over to Centennial as a Sophomore for one or two classes this fall and he thought living in Honors was well worth it. It is in a good location and near one of the best dining halls - he says.

I have not read anything here about Wood dorm, anyone have any info/thoughts?
