Ask Questions about North Carolina State

Kinda far away, close to the gym, and I think the rooms have a feature people specifically like (maybe your own bathroom or a larger room)?

Hi ncstatefreshman,

I am international freshman who has been admitted to the Computer Engineering program at NC State for the Fall 2015 term. As an international student, I had no idea about what my on campus housing options were and what options to choose. So, I had applied for on campus housing but I did not have any special preference. However, I was asssigned a room in Gold Hall. I have a gut feeling that my experience at the Gold Hall is going to be dull. But I’m not sure. Could you please tell me how good or bad the Gold Hall is? Thanks in advance.

@MuggleMom19 Wood Hall is suite style, surrounded by pine trees and seems like it is off in its own little corner of campus. If you like pines, you’ll probably like Wood. It may not be the best dorm for freshmen since it is secluded and know you will have to hike, ride a bike or the bus to get to classes.

My son says everyone who lives there complains it’s too far …

Tomorrow is move in day for us. Anything to keep in mind to make the process smoother?

DavidHopkins, we moved our Freshman son in yesterday to Metcalf dorm. This is a little in the game, but for those still packing, a few tips that come to mind:
-If you know back roads into campus, use them. Avoid driving long stretches of Hillsborough/Western Ave as much as possible.

-Ask for help, if it doesn’t come to you! Many dorms have upperclassman from various student organizations helping out. We had 4 young men converge as we popped our trunk and amazingly one trip to the upper floor of Metcalf, and we were done.
-Use Cardboard boxes to consolidate and stack goods, thus minimizing trips to/from the car. The boxes can then be broken down and conveniently disgarded in recycle bins on your way out.
-Use a hand truck/dolley if you have one available.
-If you have a rubber mallet, take it with you. Comes in handy if your student decides they want to disassemble and rearrange their bed frame.
-Reminder: On move-in day, in many high-rise dorms, the elevators only take people up! Once you’ve delivered the goods to the dorm room, you have to walk down the stairs. It’s a pain, but it keeps the traffic flowing smoothly. I found several people standing at an elevator, and had to remind them it will never come.
-And for some (me!), put aside any project manager, efficiency-oriented mindset from daily work, and just ride with the joy of the moment. This day was a long time coming!
