I lived in Kerr hall last year as a CS student, it was fine. I’m not sure what you mean by affected by a music community?

The dorm was one of the biggest “partying” dorms last year, but noisewise was fine. I’d say you’d only really hear people loudly playing once a week max. There’s a practice room on the first floor that’s soundproof. Someone even brought a drum set into it for the whole building to use.

The whole building knew each other very well, it was a good community. While the dorm was a big partying down, it was the last freshman dorm to ever have an EMT called for it, and that was for someone falling down the stairs, not being too drunk.

I chose Kerr for variety. I didn’t want to live and breathe CS. If your son wants that, I would highly recommend switching to the CS LLC, which I am guessing Kennedy is this upcoming year (they move some LLC’s around, Kerr is always the same building though).

The stetson’s aren’t really awesome. They remind me of hospitals, white walls and no color or personality. Kerr is a much better building aesthetically in my opinion. My room in Kerr was a nice washed navy blue. The hallways / common rooms / bathrooms had a range of color as well.

Despite being a party dorm, you’d find people out in the hallway working every day. You’d often have to actually walk around them because they’d take up the hallway. The common rooms were often study rooms as well. Kerr, at least last year, was very much work hard play medium hard.

Hope that helps you decide!

Do you apply to the Honors Program? Also if you don’t get in or apply Freshman year can you try again the next year?

You do not apply to the honors program, it is offered to you along with admission based on various criteria…

You can apply after first or second semester of freshman year though; Her is the info:

Thanks for the information

Well you can apply for a spot on the Honors Waitlist if not offered admission w/ your regular admission. That’s what I did and I ended up getting in

@PengsPhils thank you so much for such a detailed feedback!! Really appreciate your input. My son plays guitar so he’s actually looking forward to staying with a music community. In fact he says this is perfect as he will make some new diverse friends rather than just CS ones. Also he says he would study in the library and only come to the dorm when he needs to crash or hangout with his friends at the building so I guess its gonna work great!
Also we checked out Kerr Hall while we were at the Orientation and the building is simply gorgeous…royal in fact! And the surroundings are just so beautiful. We are ultimately quite happy with the Kerr…dint get to check it out from the inside but Im sure its good.
So that being said, thanks for your time…I think our son should be all set for this year. Northeastern overall is an amazing place to be at!

@NEUfreshmenmom Great to hear! Personally, I think it has one of the best locations as well with being very close to Boylston, Newbury, and the Fenway / Kenmore area. Make sure he knows about El Pelon. It’s an authentic mexican place a short walk across the park that beats Chipotle or Qdoba with ease in quality and price. A good deal of NEU students from the Kerr side of campus knows it well. I was told about it the first day in Kerr by my RA.

@PengsPhils will let him know for sure. Thanks for reassuring again!

Hi! Any Theater majors on here that can speak about that program and Coops available? Also areyou stillpaying tuition while doing a Coop? I thought it was no tuition just room and board? And do you then have to make up for the classes you miss while doing a coop? Thanks!!

You do not pay tuition while on coop. You do not miss any classes while on coop. The academic programs are set up around coop. Here is the Northeastern Coop website:

Which MBTA semester pass would you recommend getting? There are so many options, it seems overwhelming.

Almost everyone I know opts for per ride, not passes. Unless you have a job/internship, it’s usually not worth it. There’s lots of places you can walk to such that the T is only really for far downtown or for a suburb area. I regularly used the T, more than most of my friends, but still did not need a pass. Get a charliecard and just load it up as needed.

Is it worth it to rent the mini-fridge/microwave combo from Northeastern? A lot of people say they get sick of the food in the dinning halls after a while and I was wondering if it’s a good idea.

I couldn’t go without it, very worth having. The dining hall food is a lot better than most places, but it’s a worthwhile convenience to be able to have a break from it.

Okay thanks for the advice!!!

Another quick question:

Am I allowed to bring a fridge up with me or is my only option to rent one?

http://www.northeastern.edu/housing/room-regulations/

I had to look this one up to be sure, but generally yes. I would check the guide in the link above for your specific hall as, apparently, it does vary.

Also, your own microwaves are somewhat frowned upon but generally accepted. I know people who went that route instead of the microfridge and had little to no problems.

I think that the official rules allow you to bring your own mini fridge but not microwave, IIRC.

Thanks for the help

@BPearlman97 Although I was told that we do have the option to buy a microfridge, I haven’t seen anything telling me how to purchase one. Where did you see it?
