@bethanylm291 Near zero for CS. I think I’ve paid more for books in philosophy than in sum for CS. A vast majority of CS classes have no book. Math and Sciences will be the big books, usually around $100 each. The spread depends on the person, but average $100 a year (of classes) for books is probably about right.
I think @PengsPhils may have meant $1000/year.
@TomSrOfBoston No I meant $100 a year. I paid for maybe 4 books over $25 in my entire academic career. 2x$100 books (math courses), 2 x $50 books, and then a few $10-$20 ones. I never paid for a CS book once. Those lower price books probably add up more than I remember though, so let’s round up and say $600 total or $150/classes year
I can confirm that the first 5 mandatory (Fundies 1, 2, discrete, logic etc.) CS courses had a TOTAL cost of less than $50 (1 Prof required a clicker). All the material is provided electronically at no cost.
can we use dinning $ at the convenient store in Marino
I believe they take husky dollars but not dining dollars.
okay. thats what i suspected, thanks for confirming!
Thanks @PengsPhils and @suzyQ7, that is great to hear! My son is a combined major with CS and Math, so there will be some $$$ for the math courses I suppose. I have encouraged my son to look for rentals and do price matching.
My daughter’s experience was that Math books didn’t cost much - some were on-line others she got used. Typically only one book for a course.
My son said that his one textbook he had to buy was $40. I remember as an engineering student way back when, I was spending $200 a semester!!!
when does student employment start?
@bethanylm291 If they try to charge $200 for a textbook these days, students will just download them for free from pirate sites. Some publishers are offering a flat rate for all you can eat (like Netflix for books) and others are just offering lower prices for digital copies. Many of the computer science textbooks are free (digital of course).
@plexus if by student employment you mean coop the earliest it would start would be January of sophomore year. Others will start July after sophomore year.
Is the ED 1 acceptance rate published? Ive been looking all over the internet and have not found anything regarding last year’s acceptance rate.
My daughter’s birthday is Oct. 2nd and I just read on the NEU website that I can order a specialty cake, but I missed the one week deadline. I am wondering what others have done for their students? I see Amazon has some b-day boxes (mostly snacks which I don’t think she will like all of them). I also Googled and saw that some bakeries deliver but a couple I looked into also want a week notice for deliveries.
I did the specialty cake through the website when my daughter was in school. She would share it with her friends.
I have also done a dozen georgetown cupcake (they are on Newbury street) - you probably want to get those picked up ( I think they will deliver).
The Star Market on Huntington street will do birthday sheet cakes of different sizes. Try calling them (again your daughter will most likely have to pick up from there.)
The specialty cake is ordered through Wollaston’s Market in Marino - try calling them directly to order the same cake. (617) 247-0011
Thank you for the info @kiddie ! I will see what I can do at the last minute!
Where do you recommend for a 19th birthday dinner? My daughter wants to go with some girlfriends and would like to dress up. She wants it to be fancy enough to dress up and not feel out of place, but affordable for college students (and good food) - I know, that’s a difficult place to find!
Not sure what fancy means to your daughter, but we just celebrated a birthday at Buttermilk and Bourbon (on corner of Dartmouth and Commonwealth, easy T ride from campus). Fun place with delicious southern small plates, not too expensive. Have not tried sister restaurant Citrus and Salt (Back Bay, coastal Mexican) which is also supposed to be good. Lolita, on Dartmouth, trendy Mexican, gothic decor. Several places on Newbury/Boylston might work (Piatinni?). Plenty of Italian places in North End are inexpensive and nice…Does she want to stay close to campus??
Earls at the Prudential is fun. My family likes PAPA RAZZI on Newbury for Italian. They would not be out of place at either if they got dressed up. You will need a reservation for Earls (it is very popular.) My daughter has also done Max Brenner’s chocolate for special occasions.
