Lets say I’m going into Computer Science and am currently in DUS. I looked at the recommend schedule and it seems that it’s ideal to do Math 140 in your first semester. I didn’t place so well in my math placement exam and can only do Math 110. Would I be behind and possibly not even be able to enter the major?

Nope not at all! Same thing happened to me. They are really helpful at making sure you get the classes you need.

If you need to take math 140 DO NOT TAKE MATH 110 - Take Math 41 then 140. Your adviser will (should) tell you this but just keep that in mind. While Math 110 is still calculus, its nowhere near as hard as math 140. You can only use 1 of either math 140 or math 110 for credit. If you cant place into 140 they will have you take 41 which is essentially trigonometry and a review of algebra 2 before you can take math 140

Now I’m very concerned. To enter into the computer science major I need Math 140 and 141 I believe, if I take Math 41 first I would feel like I’m going to slow. This review of trig and algebra 2 is what I’m doing right now in my pre-calculus class of senior year. Unfortunately I was placed into Math 110 and 41 instead of 140.

I do have one more retake but it’s not allowing me to take it as it required 8 more hours on the learning module that’s not even available to me anymore. It also seems that many of the classes I’d like to take also needs Math 140 to be taken concurrently. I might as well study hard and take it one last time before I meet my adviser at NSO next week.

Edit: It says that I’m not permitted to take a class that I didn’t place in, even if I missed it by one point. Is there really no way to override that and go straight into Math 140…

These are reasons why it often takes 5 years to graduate. However, while it is possible for academic advisers to override the system and manually place you in classes, they tend not to. Especially for something like 140/chem 110. Even if you think you are learning the material you need now, you may not be learning it sufficiently enough to succeed at a top university.

@DylanK Hey Dylan, I’m a prospective rising senior in high school, and had a quick question about the business school. If I’m not a shoe in for regular admission (not directly to the business school), should I list business as my intended major? Or should I apply as undecided, try to get in normally, and then transfer into the business school?

So I scheduled my classes a little while back and I’m thinking if I would make it to some of my classes in time. I have a class at the FORUM building which ends at 2:15PM and then a class at 2:30PM at the WILLARD building. So that gives me 15 minutes to get from class to class. Would I have to take a bus or something or should I reschedule.

I just read your post to my student – no bus needed, and no problem

@curtiss if you are borderline do not list business, list DUS

@nanittendayo There is not a bus route to get you to willard - you should be ok, but you dont have time to do anything between, go from forum down the road, cut through the library, down the mall until you get to willard. Should only take you 10 mins tops.

@Etuck24 What’s DUS?

@curtiss department of undgrad studies. It’s for students who are undecided about what they want to major in. Helps them decide on what to do.
