Hello @vschuSCU !
Thank you so much for providing really helpful information!
I really do appreciate your help and your forum!
You’re awesome!
I got the Jesuit Ignatian award in my SCU financial aid package valued at $28k per year, but I have no idea what it is for… The website says it’s need-based, but my family is very well-off. A lot of kids from my high school that are smarter than me did not get the award. Does anybody know what it takes to receive this award besides graduating from a Jesuit high school? Thanks!
@isadat Thank you! Glad I can be of help!
@pinto21, I searched all of the SCU website and on the internet too, but I couldn’t find anything! The only information I could find was that you had to graduate from a Jesuit high school and it is need based, which is the same information that you already had. Sorry I couldn’t help you out!
I was originally planning on studying in the College of Arts and Sciences as a biology major with minors in math and chemistry, but have decided bioengineering would be a better fit for me. Is it possible to transfer to the engineering college? If so, how difficult is it to transfer?
Hi @pinto21!
It definitely is possible to transfer into the School of Engineering, however it does take a bit of time and work. First year students can only apply starting at the beginning of their first spring term, and there is an internal transfer application that must be completed, and then evaluated by the department chair. However it is recommended that you meet with the department chair before submitting the application in the spring so they can receive advising on which classes they can take in the College of Arts and Sciences that apply to their program of study.
In order for a student to be eligible for a transfer, they should complete these courses in the fall and winter term of their first year:
-Calculus sequence: Two courses from MATH 11, 12, 13, 14
-Chemistry: CHEM 11
-Physics: PHYS 31
and these Foundation course sequences should be started and finished if possible:
-Critical Thinking and Writing
-Cultures & Ideas
It’s also advised to try to enroll in any engineering course if there is space available and you have completed the prerequisites. You should try especially hard to enroll in ENGR 1 in the fall winter, or spring.
Here is a link to all of the information I just provided plus more, and the application: http://www.scu.edu/engineering/undergraduate/internal-transfer.cfm
I know it isn’t due for almost a whole year, but the application is due April 6th, in order to be have the decision back before spring advising. You can submit the application to Shane Wibeto in the Undergraduate Programs area of the Dean’s Office (second floor, Bannan Engineering). If you have any questions, please contact Shane at swibeto@scu.edu.
The department chair for Bioengineering is Dr. Yuling Yan, her email is yyan1@scu.edu if you would like to contact her with specific questions about the program.
How difficult are the bio programs or science classes in general are in terms of grades
Thanks for answering questions! Do you know if SCU accepts credit from accredited academic gap year programs that give grades?
Hi @cylpol1,
The professors in the science courses don’t post their students grades online, but just from word of mouth I’ve heard that students work very hard to receive A’s and B’s. It’s not impossible but it’s also no walk in the park.
@Pirate70,
The admissions office doesn’t mention gap year programs, but the guide to transferring course credit says that the courses must be completed at an accredited college or university. I’m not quite sure if that includes gap year programs. There’s a guide online that shows which courses will transfer best, here’s a link to that guide: http://www.scu.edu/studentrecords/transferguides/upload/General-Guide-for-TR-Student-applicants-v-3-1-2015.pdf
@vschuSCU,
I’m currently on the waitlist and, as of late, haven’t heard anything regarding SCU’s final decision. I contacted your undergraduate admissions office and was informed a decision could be made as late as July. To your knowlege, is this true? Or am I simply rejected because the date has passed and I haven’t been contacted yet?
Many thanks,
Sofia
Hi @sofiaareinaa,
I believe it’s true that Undergrad Admission could contact you as late as July. Students are usually placed on the waitlist when there just isn’t enough room for all of the students that apply. If the number of enrolled students doesn’t meet the number of expected incoming class or some students change their mind then Undergrad Admission will select students off the waitlist and invite them to enroll. All students on the waitlist will be notified of the decision, in either situation, usually in the middle of the summer when they have a better idea of what the incoming class will look like.
Does anyone have any information about the Emerging Leaders Program? I looked through the website, but I didn’t find anything detailed.
What exactly do students in the program do? What will I learn in the class, and what opportunities are given to students?
Can transfer students join a sorority?
How easy is it for a transfer student to acclimate here? (Esp. a winter transfer)
Hi @hpc225!
Transfer students can definitely join Greek Life at SCU! I have a few friends who have joined sororities after transferring and there were no issues at all for them, it’s the same process to rush for all students interested in joining.
Hope that helps!
Hi @browneyedgirl95!
From the transfer students that I’ve talked to, they’ve been able to acclimate very easily. If you’re interested in joining organizations on campus, that makes the transition a lot easier, plus it’s super easy to get involved. People who transfer to SCU find that the people and the community we have here are really welcoming and they’ll do their best to make you feel at home!
Do you know the breakdown of in state / out of state? Visited in March, son fell in love with the school, wondering how many students attend from outside the northern California area. We had people on our tour from all over the country.
Hi @mdwstMP!
The incoming class of 2015 consists of 68% of students from California, and the rest from 38 other states around the country as well as from 27 countries around the world.
Hi, You mentioned in a post from November 11, 2014 that you review the best results on SAT and ACT tests even subscores. Do you recommend submitting an ACT test with a lower composite if certain subscores from that test are higher than the test with the higher composite?
Hi @bisonkid,
The admission counselors here at SCU ask that you submit all test scores when you submit you application, so they’ll look at how you performed on each time you took the test. They’ll take the scores from both of these into consideration when looking at your application.
Hi, I applied Early Decision, but my college counselor forgot to sign her portion of the early decision agreement form and send it to SCU until mid november when SCU emailed me and notified me of this. Are aid/scholarships given out on a first come first serve basis? and if so, will this affect the package I may get if accepted since my application might not have been evaluated until late in the ED pool?
