Ask Questions about UMD Here

I applied regular decisions instead of early because I didn’t know only students who apply early are able to receive admission to the honors college and scholarships. Do you guys know when I will be apply to honors college if I get into UMD. Also, what kind of scholarships are available for regular decisions students.

Here is a link from the UMD Honors College web site. Normally, you can apply after 2 semesters. I don’t know if there are any scholarships available

I went on a tour last April and we did not get to see the freshman dorms. It seemed as if they were very far from campus. How does this work? How long is the walk from the dorms to the campus and are shuttles available? If so, how reliable are they? Ty

@Mak113 - I think most of the freshman dorms are on North Campus. That’s where my D is and she walks to all her classes. There are shuttles, but it seems to me that many students walk

Thank you!

Just curious I have searched this forum with a fine toothed comb and still haven’t found any pertinent information on Need based aid. Most other schools have posted or informed Accepted Students in this matter. It is all fine and good that Uof Maryland is sending us info almost daily about such issues as Accepted Students Days and so forth. But the reality to parents is 'how much $$$$ is being offered via scholarships, grants and need based money" It seems to be rather late in this game and UMCP website states by April 1 2015 okay does that mean April 1 or not? I understand the stress and extra work being put on both the Admissions Office and the Financial Aid office but really how are parents from out of state or in state for that matter make plans for these visits without thorough evidence on the actual cost of an education at such a great institution. This whole last minute stuff is dizzying .Couldn’t Maryland be more specific in such pressing matters having both students and parents alike having to make life changing decisions in such little time defeats the purpose in my opinion. When contacting UMCP office I seem to get a prompt card response of "Both scholarships and grants and financial aid packages will be released by April 1 . Okay its March 30th does that mean within the next 2 days or is this just another fictitious date ?

@OrangeWhite22‌ I can tell you that all of my classmates who were accepted to UMD are getting pretty antsy about financial aid and we’re all in state. It’s stressful but we have no choice but to wait.

I don’t think that they’re lying about the April 1st date; I wouldn’t be surprised if they waited until tomorrow or April 1st. They seemed to wait until a few days before the posted date or in this case, 1 or 2 days before the posted date

I know that UMD only looks at SAT math and reading but do they do that also for the ACT?

is freshmen connection a bad thing? like do the other students look down upon the kids who go through freshmen connection? thats what im worried about the most.

@moon1light9path7 - My D is a freshman at UMD. She has a good friend who was in Freshman Connection. As far as I can tell, no one really cares that you’re in Freshman Connection. You have classes, live in a dorm, have a meal plan, go to athletic events and parties. It’s a temporary situation and nothing to worry about. You just have to take later classes

@SoofDad‌ Thanks for the info! Also, do you know if students in Freshmen Connection can transfer to the business school during the fall semester or do they have to wait till the spring semester.

@moon1light9path7 -There are a couple things to consider

  1. The Business school is one of the few LEPs that remain competitive, even for transfers
  2. You need to complete the gateway courses, with the required GPA, and that will probably take at least one semester, maybe 2.

@SoofDad‌ okay thanks for the information!

Are dorms guaranteed for Freshman Connection students? (If they request them?)

Never mind, they are for those who enroll by May 1.

Hi, I was accepted into spring admissions and I am probably going to do the freshman connection program but just a few questions.

  1. Is there addition tuition to be paid on top of regular tuition for this program, or is it still the flat 29k plus room and board.
  2. Is there any reason to spend my first semester at another school instead of freshman connection
  3. I was not accepted into the engineer program. Would entering the engineer program after 1 or 2 semesters have any impact on graduation time? And could I use ap credits on the English and social studies classes? Thanks

@‌juggerz - 1. I don’t know. UMD does have a freshman connection web site. Maybe it’s on there
2. I don’t know of any good reason to go to another school first semester. If you want to be a Terp, start in the fall.
3, It could have an impact. It really depends on what you can accomplish. Some AP credits can be used for GenEd requirements. Search the IMD website for AP credit to see what they accept

Hi, If I have a 3.65 college gpa and I don’t know if I will get in. I was wondering if I don’t could I appeal or just apply for regular decision by June 1st?

For transfer applications, do you know what they pay attention? Are high school documents important? I read on a another fourm umd only pays attention to gpa.

Is freshman connection a limited enrollment thing? Because I don’t want to enroll until I see financial aid
