Does anyone know where I can find the statistics for recipients of the Banneker/Key Scholarship at the University of Maryland? I will probably apply, but I don't know if I'm competitive.

Thanks!

They will consider you automatically as long as you apply by the priority deadline, and they won’t consider you at all if you don’t.

The B/K was a little unpredictable (some people got it whom you wouldn’t expect and some people didn’t get it whom you would), but, in a nutshell, if you’re also a candidate for Ivies or very selective colleges, you are a candidate for B/K, but not a shoo-in.

On the other hand, occasionally someone who isn’t a candidate for top schools gets the B/K. At least the partial.

Remember that Banneker/Key scholarships will go to URM first. The scholarship came about for the advancement of minorities. Not that others don’t get it but the priority is given to URM.

Also wanted to add this is a list of the scholarships I personally have seen kids get.

Also you have a much better chance if your instate. Youre pretty SOL for out of state since they dont want to give a full ride to an OOS.

But among people i know who have BK, it seemed pretty random, like some people are not/ do not seem good enough students to be getting BK, compared to many who missed out

Hubert, there are several B/K scholars (who post here regularly) who are OOS, both full and partial. Most of the OOS B/K recipients have top GPAs and SAT scores.

I think it’s worth noting that although there are often B/K surprises–in both directions, as others have noted–the students who don’t get B/K when you’d think they would often do get another significant scholarship.
