@psssthoy here is what is on the Villanova website regarding freshman move in :
The Orientation 2018 dates are August 23-26, but Freshmen Move-In is Wednesday, August 22. More detailed information will be sent home in June with specific times and locations for Move-In.

Opening Day, Thursday August 23, will include the University Welcome, meetings for parents and students with both Academic Colleges and Orientation Counselors, Parent Info Sessions and Resource Fair, Family Picnic and Opening Mass. The parent programs will end Thursday evening after the Family Picnic. All Orientation events are casual and you should dress comfortably for hot weather. New students will continue with the Orientation program through Sunday evening. A more detailed schedule will be available in August.

MOVE-IN DAY:
WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.
On Move-In Day, there will be an increased amount of traffic, as well as long waiting periods as we facilitate check-in for almost 1,700 new students. To expedite this process and ease the waiting, all new students are assigned an arrival time based on their last name that is listed below.
TIME LAST NAME
TBD TBD
We ask for your cooperation with your assigned arrival time. Students are welcome to arrive on campus any time AFTER their assigned times. Check-in resumes at 7 p.m. for those who cannot arrive during the day and on Thursday August, 23 from 9 a.m. - noon.

@psssthoy for move-in day, you are given a specific time during the day based on your last name (it isn’t alphabetical, just random letters are assigned to times). so if you are given a 9 A.M. time, for example, you can move-in anytime from 9 A.M. to later that night. if you get a 3 P.M. time, you cannot move-in until 3 P.M. or later. this is just to help with the traffic situation on South Campus that day.

yes you can mail a few boxes beforehand to Nova and the orientation staff will deliver it to your room. you can mail the boxes in early August with the address as follows:

Student’s Name
Residence Hall and Room Number
Villanova University
800 Lancaster Avenue
Villanova, PA 19085-1699

your son can bring whichever he prefers, or both! i have seen students with both around campus. i have seen more skateboards, but there are bike racks at the dorms and at some of the buildings around campus.

Daughter is 2022 School of Nursing…google requirements for laptop Villanova university school of engineering…they list which requirements for laptops including operating systems as each program has its own.@psssthoy…we are from California too

@novanationer12 Thanks. I also heard yesterday that Bed Bath &Beyond sets up a pop up shop on campus during MoveIn Day. Is that true?

@Nursesmom Thank you and congratulations to your daughter.

Hi I’m going to be an incoming freshman for the fall 2018!! I have a question concerning dorms. I’ve read that roughly 2/3 of freshman are put into forced triples. I was wondering that since I submitted my deposit March 29th if you think I’ll be in a double or a forced triple? Cause I read that the earlier you submit your deposit the least likely you’ll be in a forced triple. I hope I submitted my deposit early enough but I was RD so I did it as fast as I could. And info. could help. Thanks!!

@psssthoy I’m not sure about the Bed Bath & Beyond pop-up shop, I don’t remember seeing it during my Move-In Day. however, I do know that the Bed Bath & Beyond by the school closed…they were having an everything-must-go sale earlier this year.

@JR1329 congrats on your acceptance and for choosing Villanova! yes, generally the trend is that the earlier you submit your deposit, the better your chance of not getting tripled. however, this is not guaranteed. for example, I submitted my deposit pretty early and still got tripled (although I think it was later than when you said you submitted).

Given that the freshmen classes have continually grown to the point that freshman triples now appear outside of just south campus it is very unlikely you will not be tripled unless you are placed in Stanford or Good council

Thanks so much!! And if I were to request two roommates, would the dorm be bigger than if I were in a forced triple? Or are they all the same size regardless?

@JR1329 no, all of the dorms are the same size regardless. they are all meant to be doubles but are mostly turned into forced triples. if you request two roommates, you are volunteering to be in a forced triple (you would therefore not be in the running a double), but the benefit is that you may know the two people or at least know that you share interests, rather than going random and potentially being put in a room with people that you don’t like.

The stanford dorms are too small to have triples and the other buildings are slightly bigger rooms but all triples. @Pugli5i good counsel is triples unless one of your roommates moves out.
@JR1329 stanford floor space 15’3" x 11’7", good counsel 18’3" x 11’8"
Only problem is one person will not have a closet in a forced triple.

@a20171 good point!

for the closet issue, I know some people either split a closet with one of their roommates or did 1/3 in one closet 1/3 in the other. in my case for our triple I decided to get a portable wardrobe for $50-$80 so that I could have my own “closet,” and it worked out really well!

Also do freshman get to make thier schedule, and if so when?

@JR1329 for first semester, no, the classes are assigned to you, but I believe you can choose to add/drop classes once school starts. for second semester freshman year and beyond you register for classes on your own.

There was a Bed, Bath & Beyond little store outside of the Bookstore area last year. My son got an afternoon move in time and by the time we got him unloaded and walked over, it was very picked over and hardly anything was left. :slight_smile: Not a big deal at all, but I guess just do not count on it having something that is critical. We just ended up driving over to a shopping center that had Target, BB&B, etc and were able to pick up things he needed, like a surge protector, etc.

@phxcactus Thanks for the tip! Was traffic a big pain on move-in day? Any thoughts on making the process easier?

@novanationer12 Thanks for that tidbit about choosing of classes. I could not find anything on the website that indicated when that took place. But since freshmen are appointed classes, then that’s less stress on my son. By the way, in terms of picking classes going forward, do the students share their thoughts on professors in a forum like this?

@psssthoy , the traffic looked worse than it was, honestly. They have it down to a science. There is a long line, but it keeps creeping along and they have people out to direct you. When you get to South Campus, they have students outside the dorms to help unload, then you move your car. You will be carrying the items up stairs in some dorms (I think only one freshman dorm has an elevator, but don’t quote me), so we found bags were easier to carry up than boxes. Some people packed in tubs. I would just be cognizant of how heavy the items are. :slight_smile: I hope that helps some!

This helps tremendously @phxcactus . I’m sure I’ll have another question tomorrow for you all.

@psssthoy traffic wasn’t too terrible when I went, but I think I had the first time for move-in. the only thing that was tough was that you had to park in front of the dorm, unload your things as quickly as possible, and then move your car so that other people can pull up. the great thing is that there are a lot of upperclass students there to help carry your things to your room, so you are able to unload pretty quickly!

try to pack stuff as tight as you can in boxes so you don’t have to make as many trips. parents can also drive extra stuff down later, you can go out and buy things after you move-in, or you can ship boxes in advance. definitely move the furniture to the preferred arrangement before you start unpacking. prop your door open to keep the air flowing and so that you can meet your neighbors and upperclassmen helping freshman to move-in! label your boxes with your name and room number just in case something accidentally gets lost. one thing that I also did was pack my clothes on hangers with a trash bag around it or put it in a box, that way you don’t have to spend a lot of time hanging up your clothes.
