Ask Questions about Villanova Here!

@psssthoy oops sorry! for some reason your other question didn’t appear when I was responding earlier.

for picking classes going forward and choosing professors, there is a website called Rate My Professor that a lot of students refer to, as they can read reviews from students who have previously had class with the professor (although not all professors have been reviewed, especially if they are an adjunct professor).

Hi there, I’m a prospective student from the Bay Area in California deciding between Penn state and back Villanova for next year. I’m planning on majoring in journalism l, which had me blown away at penn state and left me with something to be desired at Villanova. I loved every other aspect of the school, but came away feeling that journalism wasn’t really a seriously thought of or focused on major. If possible, could you speak to any knowledge you have for the journalism and any programs students interned in?

Hi @Adestin769! I’m really sorry, but unfortunately I do not know much about the journalism department…here is the website, maybe you could contact the area coordinator? He may be able to give you more information or put you in contact with someone who can answer your questions.

I’m sorry I couldn’t be of more help, but good luck! Go Nova!

Do you know if many first years select roommates? (Housing office says you can do this if a group of 3 wants to live together) or do more just take their chances on random assignments? Any advice on that? Thanks

Do many engineering freshmen join Learning Communities? My son is very interested but he is a little concerned that a Learning Community may add more than he can handle.

@psssthoy great question…I’ll wait for a response with you…

@Beenthere22 From my experience and the people that I have met, I would say that most students just take their chances with random assignments. Some people do go onto the Villanova Class of ___ Facebook page and find others that have similar interests or live near them. If you pick your roommates, you are volunteering to be assigned to a forced triple. However, the benefit from this is that you will know your roommates a bit; you can pick people that have similar interests, classes, sleeping schedules, etc. If you choose the random assignment, you take the chance of receiving random roommates that you may not like, although you could also become close friends with them (and the opposite could happen if you pick your roommates too, you may end up not liking them).

@psssthoy I know a few engineering students, and they all joined Learning Communities for freshman year. From my experience in a Learning Community (I am not in Engineering, however, and every LC is slightly different), it does not take that much extra time. You have your Ancients and Moderns classes with the people from your LC (you already have to take these classes), and then most LC’s just have an extra hour (“Fourth Hour”) outside of normal classes.

@novanationer12 you are a font of useful information. Next question: Villanova has a lot of long breaks, the first one being a week break in October when it appears the dorms will be closed. Have you or anyone you know used that break to go on a service trip? What was the experience like? I see there are many available and some are cheaper than a round trip ticket home to Cali.

@psssthoy yes there are many large breaks during the school year (which is awesome)! the dorms are closed but you can register to stay on campus, especially during the breaks that are just 1 week long. I personally have never been on a service trip, but one of my friends has been on 2 (she is an international student). She has been to New Mexico and North Carolina for service trips, and claims that choosing to go was one of the smartest choices she has made so far at Nova. She says that the trips are kind of challenging, but you will meet a lot of really great people and get to make a difference/help others. It is also a good change from the normal classes and campus environment. You can also hold fundraisers and there are small scholarships that can help you pay for the service trip.

How does the student lottery system work for the basketball games?

@JR1329 there is an app for students called “Nova Athletics Student Tickets.” you go on, find the game that you want to enter the lottery for, and just hit the button to enter. they will notify you if you get a ticket, and as you use it more you build up points, which makes it more likely for you to get a ticket in the future.

I am a mom to a son, do you know if most guys have any type of mirror in their rooms, or do they just rely on the one in the hall bathrooms? I know it’s such a minor matter, but don’t know if it’s worth it to pack a mirror for the room!

Hi @goldendoodles!
All of the rooms in every dorm have a full/body-length mirror on the back of the door!

Just confirming what I believe I read from prior posts - Stanford Hall is all doubles, no triples?

Which meal plan would you suggest getting?

did any of your friends live in Honor’s housing? Did they like it? Advantage? Disadvantage??

I believe someone earlier suggested to go with the unlimited meal plan at least during the first semester, and then adjusting down 2nd semester if needed.

@psssthoy yes, Stanford is all doubles!

@nhsstudent123 yes, like @psssthoy said I responded to a similar question earlier and said that I thought getting an unlimited plan for the first semester is the best so that you can figure out how much you will eat and if you need that large of a plan. however, I do know of many people who went with a smaller plan for first semester and still did fine. read back to my earlier answer for more details! (it’s on page 4)

@auntlu one of my friends is in Honor’s housing! if read back earlier in this thread I believe I answered someone else’s question about Honor’s and I shared my friend’s response to the question, which gives more detail! (it’s on page 3)

@novanationer12 Are students on meal plans allowed to take their food to go, or to take leftovers back to their room?

What percentage of freshman are tripled? Are students less likely to be tripled in Honors dorm?
