Ask vicissitudes: Spring Admits (FAQ included)

Hey I have a question about Math 1B at FPF. I have Prof. Bourgoin and so far, the class is a little difficult. What percent of the class would you say pass in your estimate?

Hi, does anyone know if unofficial transcripts have been updated on Bearfacts for spring admits? It's been months and it still says I haven't completed requirements for Subject A, American History, and American Institutions.

Bourgoin is awesome...I thought his class was pretty easy. I would think almost everyone (if not everyone) passes.

Come to think of it I should visit him sometime.

This is only for female students.

If anyone is looking for housing during Spring 2009, my friend and I have two spots (one in a triple and one in a double) at Tau House, a nice private dorm that houses Berkeley students as well as some international students. Tau House is located on the intersection of Piedmont and Channing, so it's quite close to campus. It comes with its own meal plan, which is really convenient, as the dining hall is located on the ground floor of the dorm. The room sizes are big in comparison to the school dorms, and it comes with a 24-hour quiet study room with computers, free wifi, a common area, a pool table, a wide-screen tv, and outside "exercise" area with a ping-pong table and basketball hoop, and two balconies.

Hi spring admits. Does anyone need housing? Me and my roomate may be moving out for the spring semester. We live in Unit 3. Interested?

So pretty much, you have to be selected to the Spring Admission.

Is there any way to petition for that? Like, if I don’t get it at all, is there some way I can petition to be a Spring Admit rather than petition for Fall admission?

If you don’t get admitted at all, that means they couldn’t admit you as a spring admit either.

If you get fall admission, you get fall admission and you take it or you leave it

If you get spring admission, you can -
1- do FPF and come in fall
2- take fall semester 2009 at community college
3- do nothing fall semester 2009 and make up your missing semester via summer school or a Fall 2013 semester
4- appeal for regular fall admission

If you are rejected, all you can do is appeal your rejection and possibly get spring admission

So I just found out I was a spring admit. How do I go about appealing for fall semester? I would like to at least try for fall admission, otherwise I’ll just make do with spring.

I’m also kind of worried about signing up for the FPF thing. I’m still waiting on other schools and the possibility of finding that there is no space left worries me, as I don’t really want to go to a CC for a semester. I’d probably just sit idly at home for a semester, which isn’t all bad, but I would prefer getting FPF.

Lastly, about the no guaranteed housing deal, what happens if I cannot find housing? I live in California, but it is a pretty long drive from my home to Berkeley so I wouldn’t know what I would do. If I commit my SIR to Berkeley and I’m stuck without any housing right before the start of spring semester, I would imagine I’d be pretty stranded with few options.

OK, you can [Reserve Your Space for Fall 2009 - Fall Program for Freshmen (FPF)](http://www.unex.berkeley.edu/fpf/enroll_checklist.html) without having to SIR. There are plenty of dorm-like private housing options that you can use for fall if you don’t get housing. You can then reapply for housing for spring and you will most likely get it

I’m not sure how you can appeal for fall semester. I’d imagine do it the same way you would a normal appeal, but I seriously doubt you’ll get it.

Just sign up for FPF if you don’t mind possibly losing the 100 dollars. If you get into other schools you’re not obligated to go to Berkeley or anything.

No guaranteed housing is iffy. You’ll find something though, whether that’s themed housing, co-op, apartment, or whatever. It might not be ideal, but I’m sure you can find SOMETHING.

Thanks for the responses.

So yeah, I guess I’ll just sign up for FPF as soon as it stops saying it is full. Doesn’t seem like such a bad idea, even if it is risking 100 bucks.

The other thing about housing I didn’t mention before is that money is an issue for me. Even if housing is available elsewhere, I am not sure if I can pay. I am taking out a crapload of loans as it is, so this housing issue is probably my biggest concern with this whole spring admit thing.

For you guys, was it a lot more money for you during the first semester, or even onwards? The non guaranteed housing status continues on for your entire time in Berkeley, or not?

Theme programs don’t care whether you are FPF or Fall admit, so if you apply for theme program housing early, you could get your housing contract at the same time as Fall admits.

If we were to take classes at a Community College for the fall semester, would those credits count towards Berkeley? Such as fulfilling GE requirements and such?

I’m assuming spring admits don’t have the overnight host program thing from UCB? I know my friends who are fall admits have it.

One of my roommates last year, who was also in FPF did OHP, so yes you are allowed to do the OHP.

Was it an email, cause I can’t find it on myberkapp anywhere.

Battler: the dorms are actually the most expensive option. Alternative living situations are almost always cheaper. Also, your second year of dormitory housing is guaranteed.

They would count as units and they can fulfill requirements depending on the course/college. But they won’t count towards your UC GPA.

Any stats on the percentage of Spring Admits getting into Haas?
Surely being a Spring Admit won’t affect the chances of getting into Haas?

No impact at all. For Haas, you have to petition later in your undergrad time at Cal, with entry requiring not only certain requisite classes, all the breadth classes, a minimum of 60 units but also on having earned a very good GPA as it is competitive and not guaranteed admission. [Admission Eligibility, Undergraduate Program - Haas School of Business, University of California Berkeley](http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/ucbtransfer_eligibility.html)

You will be WAY past any effect of Spring admissions by the time you complete 60 units and all those requirements.
