Asking for Letters of Recommendation

I feel as if this is the one area I haven’t thought about much in preparing to transfer.

I go to a top 40 school, had the strongest high school stats possible, and am doing well in most of my classes. But I’m not sure my professors know me well enough.

Here are some more details:

  1. My Econ professor knows me by name. I go to office hours frequently, and I ask a fair amount of questions during those sessions. At one point, I was thinking about withdrawing from the course, but I seriously underestimated how well I did on a particular test I was worried about. I'm just afraid that that will hurt her perception of me. (To be clear, I did well on the test. Scored higher than the average.)
  2. Another professor teaches around 150 students in a single lecture hall. He knows me by name, I'm doing well in the class, he does office hours (by appointment), and I've gone to two of those.
  3. Two of my professors don't really do office hours. Lots of discussion in those classes, and I contribute frequently. Got A's on both of my papers for one of those classes. Got A's on all of my papers for the second class, too.

With only a week left in the semester, do you think I can get good letters of recommendation from these professors? I still plan on contributing in class, going to their office hours, etc. I just want to make a good impression, because our second semester doesn’t start until late January, and I don’t think any second-semester professors will be able to write good letters in only one month’s time.

Bump?

All you can do is ask. But ask them specifically if they are comfortable giving you a good letter.
