Asking for more aid?

Hello! I was wondering if I could ask the schools if I need more aid? My dad hasn’t had a stable job and was unemployed for months in the year 2018. However, the FAFSA uses 2017 and that year my dad had a stable income. My EFC is 3893
I recieved a generous Grant and scholarship to Pratt MWP but still can’t afford the school. I really want to go to art school and I got accepted to others. I’m still waiting to see if I got full scholarship from University of the Arts or not. Pennsylvania college of art and design barely gave me aid and I got the top scholarship they offer which is 2000 a year ( not much :frowning: ). The other art schools barely gave me aid. However, I recieved nice grants that I can afford in small colleges and universities, Lycoming College, Moravian College, Cedar Crest College, and Marywood University. These schools would cost less than 5k per year. However, there art program isn’t really that good and I fear they won’t have the best networking. Is it possible to appeal my Aid to Pratt, Pratt MWP, PCAD or UArts? Thank you! Also I live in Pennsylvania and my EFC is 3893.

You can always ask for more aid. Think it through first so that you can present the best reason as to why you should receive more.

Does Pratt’s financial letter leave a family amount close to your EFC? How about the other school/ How is your father doing now in 2019? The colleges are expecting some of current income to be used to pay for school. If you work full-time during the summer, can you earn $3,000?

Hello! Pratt MWP financial letter was close to 20k a year and Pratt Brooklyn letter still hasn’t arrived but doubt it’s going to be better because it’s way more expensive than MWP. My dad is still unstable financially and only making about 700 bi-weekly, my mom doesn’t work due to her sickness and my brother is still in school. :frowning: I could work full time in summer but not sure if it could effect my grant aid. UArts financial letter is similar to Pratt MWP and hopefully I can get the full tuition scholarship from UArts ( letter coming in mail hopefully a yes!). PCAD is 14k a year I have to pay. The smaller colleges such as Lycoming, Moravian, Marywood, Cedar Crest would be only about 5k per year.

One of the benefits of the LACS on your list is that you could likely add a minor or 2, or do a double major along with your art, in an area which could bolster your career prospects and make you more marketable down the road.

For example, creative writing, communication/media studies, film and video arts, theater, and marketing, are some academic areas which would complement your art studies.

Although you could appeal for more aid at the art schools on your list, as long as they are peer schools, art schools are not known for generous aid. It seems unlikely you could get costs down to $5k.

Do your finaid packages from the LACS include federal loans already? As a student, you can borrow $5500 in fed loans freshman year, $6500 sophomore, and $7500 junior and senior years. Do your aid packages include any loans, which the colleges may be expecting your parents to borrow?

Loans above the federal amounts available to you as a student will require a cosignor.
