Asking for more??

Hi, I was accepted to a college by ED and just got my financial aid (i was supposed to get in December, but I was missing a form)

I applied to ED, because the school is need blind and meets the need 100%
well it met my need 100%, but with the economy now... i just have to try to get more.

so, can I do ask for more? How should I approach this matter?
and how do I prove that I need more money?

Thanks in advance!!

You would need to show this need blind school that your financial situation is not the same as what you reported when you filled out your estimated Profile (which is what I'm assuming you did to get an estimated financial aid award for ED purposes). You will need to document the change in financial circumstances (loss of income, loss of job, etc). You will need papers in writing to document this from the employers.

If you believe your financial situation has CHANGED, you should contact the financial aid office. If your financial situation has not changed, but your family is feeling more strapped for one reason or another, you may be out of luck.

Also, keep in mind that it is the discretion of the colleges to review special circumstances for the adjustment of financial aid. They do not have to do so.

Things that might be considered would be loss of employment by a parent, or significant medical expenses incurred by the family.

I hate to say it...but if you have losses in your college funds, etc...that is probably not going to net you a gain in need based aid. EVERYONE's funds took a hit.

Dain: that is a vague plea. How exactly have circumstances changed? It has to material. It must be documentable. It must be relevant to how schools assess financial need. Otherwise, every student I know can say the same of their parents net worth and economic well being.

thanks. just wanted to know. guess I have to take out loans.

Hey, everyone is worse off -- especially since October. So, if you were admitted ED in mid-December, you may feel that the world has changed. But it has changed for everybody. At least you got in at your dream school. So, congrats. You don't have the stress over the next few months others do.

Dain...if your financial circumstances have changed...you can at least discuss this with your ED school. They will make the decision on whether this is substantiative or not.

But as others have said...it does need to be documentable and needs to reflect something that would actually alter your EFC. I don't believe the "value" of investments does that, if that is your reason. I know that "parents won't give as much" doesn't matter either. BUT if you have another reason, perhaps you'd feel better at least trying.
