aspiring photo/film/media major and parents

Well, I've come across a famous case of a not-so-supportive family. I guess it's because of the Asian ideals, and I'm not trying to stereotype at all, but it's a generalization for a reason. I want to major in film and photography, meaning I want to apply to a wide array of art schools, or schools with prominent art programs.

Other thing is, I've got a 3.2 GPA and a 28 on my ACT. I'm still working on my portfolio, and I'm going to Art Center to ask if they can help me develop my concepts more. I am applying to NYU Tisch, Cooper Union, CalArts, Art Center, RISD, MICA, Pratt, Syracuse, UCSC, etc.

I really want to apply to schools in New York state, even the city. I live in California right now, but I am originally from the east coast and have only spent my high school years here. I'm very sick of it, and I'd like to leave. What schools have strong photo/film/media programs around there? Also, any liberal arts schools would be nice.

My family is really obsessed with prestige, and want great schools. But I'm not really sure if I'd even get into said schools. And it looks like CC is not an option, unless I want to be cut off/killed/assassinated, etc. Trust me on that.

Any advice would be nice, I don't really know what to do. I've got no interest in nursing or premed, biology, or law. I'd suck at all of those.

Thanks in advanced. Sorry this is kind of all scattered everywhere, I gotta lotta issues to work out...

sorry about your trouble
why Asian kids suffer so…
Cooper seems bumped up photo/film/ etc by looking at this new view book I just got.
If you are originally from here, parental bragging right/prestige part is covered, all you have to do is to get in.
I will write more about in Cooper thread soon if you care to visit that.

thou everyone is dying to get in-state tuition from CA schools, you know, but… I know.
Try the best you can,
how is money?
I guess OK if you are doing NYU.

Money’s tight, especially with my brother in college at UCI. But it looks like if I get into any prestigious school my family will be supportive, outside my single mother.

love your mom anyway, yes?
if one sibling at in-state tuition stretches family finance, how could you afford NYU?
You are saying they will somehow pay for NYU?
why is that???
I asked “why NYU?” in other thread and still a mystery.
What do you think of Cooper?

Have you looked into Chapman University in Orange, a very prestigious private school and among the best film schools in the world, just up the freeway from UCI? If you’re interested in film, do you have what it takes? Your GPA is on the lower end, but your ACT is decent. Give it a shot, you have nothing to loose.

When you say you want to major in film/photography, they are very different. So you want to do photographs or make films. Depending upon which you answer, I’d recommend different programs to you. Let us know, and I’ll offer you a few specific suggestions.
