...association of ideas about...

Hello!

I`m a student of geography from Slovenia, Europe. This semester I am working on the problem of humangeographical aspects of Deep South at the subject Geography of North America.

I have one request for you...Could you write down few associations of your ideas about the word SOUTH.

The results of this "poll" would be very interesting for my case study, so help me! :)

Just one another thing. Could you also write down in which US state do you live or you were born?

thanks in advance,

Freigeist;)

dirty, drawl, fried chicken, incest, sweet potato pie, hospitality...I live in Florida

Thanks a lot. Interesting. What about others?

football, humid, fried chicken, white superiority, old school, football again, booze, heat from Illinois

home, slow-paced, friendly, hospitable, hot

All of the above+stupid people+gun toting southern baptists+women are treated like crap.....NY, CA, then NY again.

polite, football, civil rights, dirt roads, hot, middle of nowhere, racism, crazy christians, confederate flags.

I'm from the south, Alabama.

My suspicions were correct, more or less :)... for people from North, but not for Southern people. Just few of you connected it with friendliness or hospitality...but othewise you wrote down mostly negative characteristics. How so? Don
t you think your answers are a little bit stereotypic?
Why am I asking? Couse in books and articles, etc. available in Europe everybody talks about Sunbelt, rapid economic growth, biomedical research institutions, aerospace industry, Walt Disney Worlds (don
t smile :)). What` s the truth?

Redneck and banjo. And yes, these are in fact based on stereotypes.

I'm sure most people just list these words due to the existing stereotypes, but there are certainly many positive aspects about the south.

Most people think we're all crazy southern baptist racist gun toting *******s, but that's just the very small but very loud minority.

i think that stereotype encompasses a larger portion than a minority in many areas...the reason is that people won't move to the area or the "normal" ones moved out...add obesity too as mississippi is the fattest state

"the reason is that people won't move to the area or the "normal" ones moved out"

Oh, come on! Black middle class moves to the south once again...probably to the metropolitan areas...but they move back

i think of a map with an arrow pointing south. im from NY
