I was wondering how is the southern culture like, especially for a northener? it seems pretty awesome but never have really been down there (except Texas, which was amazing).

I am from the North. You get used to differences very quickly. If you’re open minded, you’ll be fine. I think the any differences are exaggerated to an extent. And Vanderbilt’s student body is very diverse, most aren’t Southerners.

Bottom line is that the place isn’t really all that different. You’re still in America.

I’m also a Northerner (Wisconsin), and I have to say I was quite impressed by the sincerity of the people down in Nashville when I visited Vandy. I’d heard the stereotypes about this of course but I was pleasantly surprised to find them accurate. Other than that, there were no overwhelming cultural differences.

i’m from alabama (going to vandy next year), and i have no idea what constitutes ‘southern’ at all. logically i would act southern, and i personally think my mannerisms parallel my peers, but i’ve been mistaken for a west-coast’er soooo many times. almost nobody where i live has an accent (or at least not a prominent one; i’ve definitely been told i don’t have one by like… a cumulative 30 people from other parts of the country). As for the stereotypes, i’d say people from the south (or at least vestavia) are generally as racist as anyone else, save some old ppl. and who doesn’t enjoy a good barbecue?.. i think that’s it? so, unless bbq erects some kind of social barrier, i think all you non-southerners will blend in just fine. :]

what else makes the south… southern?

Dressing up for football games …

… is not uniquely southern at all.

if you are northern. we dont want you. ill probably get a lot of sh>>>>>it for this from other peole. but im drunk and i dont care. everyone i know is upset vandy is getting smarter because it means less cool peopel will be here. go vanderbilt because we are beter than other schools. yeahhhh. dont even bother saying how ridiculo0us i am becuase i dont care.

Really, Moosecream? Where else do girls wear dresses & guys wear khakis & button down shirts (or pastel polo shirts) to football games?!

vandyclassof2013… i would be honored to go to the same school as you

We don’t dress up, kelsmom. We just always look that good ;)

LOL @ vandyclass2013…thanks for representing Texas and the South so well haha

In fact, I’m not totally sure if Texas is even considered part of the South. I think we’re southwest? Big 12? Not sure.

oh, that kind of “dress up.” lolz, my b.
