CMU, GA Tech or Case Western

which has the best program for Astrophysics

Do you mean physics since they don’t actually have astrophysics majors?

yes…physics major

anyone have opinions on physics programs at these schools

I don’t have personal knowledge of these programs, but since all three have large engineering programs you can expect that your freshman physics and math classes will be dominated by engineering students. I looked up the following data on degrees granted in the most recent year (source: College Navigator):

School/Bachelor’s degrees/PhD degrees
Case/10/4
CMU/24/10
GT/22/20

So, I would judge Case to have a significantly smaller program than the other two and I would expect GT to have the greatest variety of undergraduate research opportunities given its larger PhD program. However, you should go through the department websites of all three to learn more about what research the professors are actually leading. The websites will also tell you what classes are generally available, but be aware that the smaller the program the more likely that more specialized classes are offered infrequently.

Overall, they are all reputable schools for the sciences and other factors concerning “fit” may overcome differences in your opinions about their physics programs. Good luck.
