Ok, so I am currently a high school sophomore in SoCal that is interested in going into Business Administration/Management. As I was searching for good business schools around the country, I saw Arizona State University ranked decently. By my junior year, I plan to have taken 6 AP classes (3 per semester). I expect my weighted GPA to be around 3.6 with an unweighted GPA around 3.4.
As I was doing my research, I became very interested in ASU. I became interested in the Carey school of Business at ASU. What advice can people give me on not only getting accepted into ASU, but also their business school, because I heard ASU has a decent acceptance rate, but it’s business school is highly selective. Do I have a chance on getting accepted into an undergrad program with the ASU Carey school of business?
My extracurricular activities include: 8 years piano at local music school, 3 years club swim, and high school swim team throughout my entire high school career.
I have many questions regarding ASU:
Is it as easy as it looks to get accepted into ASU?
Does ASU look at weighted or unweighted GPA?
How can I increase my chances of getting accepted into their business school?
I know I am just a sophomore and I haven’t taken the SAT or ACT but am I on the right track?
ASU’s Carey School of Business is very good and your projected stats would position you to be accepted. You may also want to check out the Barrett Honors College - Carey and Barrett Honors is a great combination that my daughter will be considering if she applies (currently a socal junior). Also, it may be worth discussing your AP strategy with your GC as 6 AP’s by end of junior year is a lot - rigor is important but keeping your unweighted GPA up is important and what most admissions are based off of. I would strongly advise taking less AP’s next year and getting your unweighted GPA up. If you apply to CSU/UC’s as well you just need 4 AP/Honors classes/8 semesters for the grade bump - pretty important to be competitive but more than that not necessary and may hurt you OOS.
@my2caligirls Thank you! So from what I understand ASU looks at unweighted GPA? I am unfamiliar with this Barret Honors program. Is there a certain requirement in order to get in?
@smartstudent1000 best to explore ASU admissions threads here on CC and see what people say they were accepted with - I have heard 3.8 GPA and 30 ACT but have seen many say they have gotten in with far less. Taper down your AP’s slightly and get your unweighted GPA up. You can load up on more AP’s senior year when a “B” won’t have too much impact. The 4 AP/Approved Honors approach for the CSU’s/UC’s may serve you well outside of California as well . . . Barrett is really good so look into it.
Good choice on WP Carey / Barrett Honors College combo–I think about 25% of Barrett students are also business majors. Be sure to check out the scholarship calculator on ASU’s website to estimate which combo of GPA and ACT/SAT test score lowers the cost of attendance for you. Looks like you are on a strong track and taking control of your future.
WP Carey is far and away one of the top Supply Chain Management schools in the USA, if you are interested in that. The recruiting for graduates with SCM majors has been very robust for 20 years. On the WP Carey Admissions page they show the average GPA and test scores for admitted students as a guide as well. Barrett Honors college is considered the gold standard of public honors colleges. You can google the New York Times article published a while back.
There is a reason why ASU looks easy to get into. ASU (under the current president, Michael Crow) has a philosophy that says everyone who wants to attend college should be given the opportunity. So getting admitted should not be the biggest hurdle or a point of pride for the university; rather, the hard work a student puts into his or her college education to graduate is what produces outstanding and employable students and citizens. So, easy to get in, but it is up to your effort, motivation, and hard work to graduate well in 4 years and excel in life. Recruiters and grad schools love that about ASU, as it graduates many more motivated first-generation and economically-challenged students that might not otherwise have had a chance to attend and graduate from college.
WP Carey business school and Ira Fulton engineering however do have higher admissions criteria than the university as a whole though. Awesome school and place. Best of luck to you in your search!
@my2caligirls So this semester, it looks like I will be getting a C in math. This is my first C and hope it will be the last. Do I still have a chance of getting into W.P. Carey school of business and possibly as well as the Barret Honors program? Right now, I do not know much about the Barret Honors program, but I would still attend ASU and try to get my business degree even if I wasn’t in this Honors program.
@EngPII What are some requirements that I would have to meet in order to get into the W.P. school of business. Right now, I don’t know much about the Barret Honors program therefore it is not my first priority. Right now, I am just looking to get my future business degree. Is there anything in particular I should be doing?
@smartstudent1000, If you look at the WP Carey School of business site, check out undergraduate admissions. There are many BS programs, as well as BA programs (one of the BA programs is a degree in business with a specialty in Chinese language–very cool program IMHO). Though Supply Chain Management rules in ASU WP Carey–one of the very best ROI in business education West of the Rockies.
The BS requirements for admission to WP Carey School of Business state:
Freshman applicants who meet the requirements for ASU freshman admission and who meet one of the following four criteria may be directly admitted to the W. P. Carey School of Business Bachelor of Science degree programs:
An SAT Reasoning score of 1230* (March 2016 and after)
An SAT Reasoning score of 1160* (prior to March 2016)
An ACT composite score of 25*
A high school class ranking in the top 8 percent
An overall, unweighted high school GPA of 3.6 in competency courses defined by ASU (4.0 = A)
*ASU and W. P. Carey do not require the writing portion of these tests.
Good point, @Sybylla. WUE (Western Undergraduate Exchange) is a great resource for those in the Western US states interested in attending universities in other Western states at a bargain rate. Unfortunately, ASU Tempe does not participate in that. Other ASU campuses like Polytechnic do participate however, and also has a Barrett Honors College and really lucrative degree programs in aviation / air traffic control.
https://scholarships.asu.edu/estimator no need for WUE - play with this estimator to see what it takes to get the President’s Award - $14k OOS. ASU is generous with merit aid.
@EngPII Although ASU is fairly easy to get into, is their business program easy to get in as well? These past few days, I have done some research, and as a college freshman, I plan to get a B.S in management for my undergrad degree. Is there anything I can do to ensure I get the major I want as well as getting into the W.P. Carey school of business?
