Hi all. '87 BSE, '88 MS alum here.
(1) Heard on the street that ASU’s Barrett Honors College finished #1 in some poll of Honors Programs. Did anyone else see that, and can you provide a link to what publication it was in?
(2) Anyone who recently attended Barrett Honors College who can share pros and cons? What was your major/minor? What campus were you studying on primarily?
Thanks so much in advance.
@ohiovalley16 - I’m a parent of three sons who attended or are attending BASIS Scottsdale Charter School, the number two ranked high school in the U.S. From the last several graduating classes of approximately 40 students, around 1/4 to 1/3 of the class has gone on the Barrett, including the 2013 valedictorian. Most of these students had the option of attending the top private universities. I have talked to parents of several of these students at Barrett, and my oldest son keeps in touch with several others. All the Barrett students seem very pleased with the education they are receiving and the Barrett environment. Popular majors have included pre-med, engineering, finance, computer science, psychology, supply-chain management, and math.
That’s terrific @Beaudreau , thanks very much!
@ohiovalley16 - Based on some of your other threads, it seems that you D is interested in journalism. If so, you may be interested in this recent article: http://www.azcentral.com/story/opinion/op-ed/2015/08/07/asu-cronkite-journalism/31248885/
@ohiovalley16 - Here’s a NY Times Op-Ed column that calls Barrett the gold standard of Honors Colleges.
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/09/opinion/sunday/frank-bruni-a-prudent-college-path.html I have visited the Tempe Barrett campus many times. It is literally a campus within a campus, with its own dorms, cafeteria, student lounges, classrooms, convenience store, and workout/recreation facility. Only Barrett students can get through the gates after hours.
As you may or may not know, the Cronkite School is located in downtown Phoenix. Barrett also has a downtown location: https://barretthonors.asu.edu/campuses/downtown Your daughter could live at either Barrett campus. The downtown and Tempe campuses are connected by both light rail and ASU’s bus service.
The College of Nursing is also on the downtown campus. The ASU law school is relocating to a brand-new downtown building in fall 2016.
