ASU Music Theatre/Lyric Opera Program

I haven't been able to find much here via the search for the ASU Music Theatre/Lyric Opera program. It intrigues me as a possible good match for my daughter given her area of vocal focus and the opportunity to explore both MT and Opera. I was hoping perhaps there is someone in this forum who can offer some comment or perhaps has a student in the program.

I’m interested in that program, as well, and from the research I’ve done I like what I see.

The biggest difference there as opposed to other schools is that it is a Bachelor of Music degree. If it is anything like the school I am at now, where I am a pre-music/vocal performance major, then there will be a big emphasis on instrument practice, music theory, and music ensembles. The audition requirements are pretty usual for MT, though there is a prescreen and they want classical selections in addition to legit MT selections. It looks they put on five or six musical productions a year, from the Production Repertoire page, about evenly mixed musicals and operas.

ASU has a very far draw as a music school, though. While I don’t know their yield and entrance class sizes, I imagine that it is very selective.

I don’t know much about their theatre programs, so I can’t offer much information there.

The best thing to do (speaking as a student again) would be to research with your daughter about it, which I assume you’re already doing. I’m interested in if anyone has a student there or more experience with the school than I do, as well.

I just thought I’d resurface this post again to see if anyone has any experience with the MT/Opera program at ASU. Since we live on the West Coast it is one of the schools we plan to visit this year, but it would be nice to get some feedback from students or parents familiar with the program.

I don’t know much about it, only that my D has taken lessons from two of the voice professors (we live near ASU), and they are extremely talented and wonderfully kind and generous people. I don’t think ASU has an MT major (do they?), but their vocal performance major is well regarded. Incidentally, one of the voice profs my daughter studied with from ASU is now at Roosevelt CCPA, but sadly we missed him when my D was there for her audition.

^^^ Arizona State has a combined Music Theatre/Lyric Opera program - BM Music Theatre Perfomrance:

My daughter finds this program very appealing because it would allow her to explore and perform both MT and Opera. She has friends at ASU and they love it there and I selfishly like the idea of keeping her closer to home.

ASU offers a distinct BM in Musical Theatre. The program has robust acting and dance requirements every single semester in addition to comprehensive vocal and musical training. The program has about 40 undergraduate musical theatre majors. Class sizes range from 10-12 students per class. The Lyric Opera Theatre program produces two musicals and two operas per year, plus student workshops and scenes/showcase productions. ASU offers many opportunities for cross-disciplinary studies and collaborations with theatre, film, dance, arts, media and design. Alumni are active on Broadway and in national tours, perform at leading opera houses all over the world, and many actually teach and lead other college musical theatre programs of their own. Being in Phoenix, many of the students take advantage of opportunities to work with the many other theatres in the area, including though formal collaborations with Phoenix Theatre and Arizona Opera. music.asu.edu/lot
