I am an electrical engineer and am considering either ASU or BYU.
ASU is ranked #121 and BYU is ranked #68 (Numbers are a little off)
But…
ASU has a better ranked engineering program (#44) and (#24) among public schools when compared to BYU (#78).
My question is would it be better for me to go to the all around better school (BYU) or the school that is better ranked in just my major (ASU)?
Im very undecided… and am just considering my college search on academic terms for now.
Thanks for any replies.

i think at this point, you have to toss rankings aside. What do you want in a school, while I don’t know much about byu, I do know asu is an extremely large school in a major metropolitan area. Also asu is in warm weather all year. Think about these things

ASU is a far better institution than BYU, especially for engineering and science. If you’re concerned about the huge population, they do have multiple campuses.

I don’t personally think that BYU or ASU are necessarily “better” institutions. Pick the one you like more. That’s what tours are for ;)

I know that the engineering program at ASU can be pretty competitive from what I’ve heard. It seems to be one of the best programs ASU has to offer but I can’t speak for what BYU is like academically. I do know that the social scenes will be quite different, so just weigh what each has to offer and see what school matches your priorities. Rankings can be difficult because I’ve seen numerous ASU billboards stating it’s one of the top 100 universities in the world, yet it normally ranks low on national university rankings.

This probably isn’t an issue for you if you are already considering BYU, but something to definitely consider that makes BYU unique (in a both positive and negative way) is the large concentration of LDS students.

Chaichia, that’s because they are citing a non-USNWR ranking when they talk about their top status in the world. The international rankings don’t follow the same pattern for generating ranks I suppose (also, ASU is actually a huge school for international students. I think it has like one of the 5-10 largest populations)
