ASU $$$ problems affecting Music??

I hesitate to post this since I know absolutely nothing, but I often see various posters recommending Arizona State for its music programs. So thought this could be relevant to some - or better yet, nothing to worry about....

I read yesterday (Wall Street Journal) that ASU was disbanding its Music Ed program. I tried Googling more info, but didn't find it in a quick search - and I know nothing about hte ASU campuses or program differentialtions, so I could still misunderstand what is really happening ( or threatened.)

There are several on-line news articles relevant to the topic. Here's one:

Arizona State to cap enrollment, cut lots of programs | EDUCATION | Local Breaking News and Weather from AZFAMILY.COM & KTVK 3TV - Arizona's Family

I hope I misunderstand the thrust of the articles. I know it's a tough environment for many states. Perhaps someone can fill in details.

Disclaimer - I know nothing (Positive, negative, neutral) about Arizona State University music or any other programs.

fiddlestix, thanks for the heads up. From the article, it appears that music related cuts are in the MM programs (instrumental performance, composition plus the Artists Diploma) and specific Masters in Musical Theater Performance/Directing/Acting concentrations.

The only Music Ed cut appeared to be in Jazz Studies, and it was unclear whether it was an undergrad or grad level program.

I could not find much by Googling, but anyone considering the music programs at ASU might want to dig deeply for authoritative info.

My on-line search techniques aren’t up to much, so I don’t know if this article is available on-line. Here’s the relevant quote from the hard copy WSJ article – February 26, 2009

Cutbacks Threaten College Experience by Melissa Korn.

“Arizona State University, for example, announced in late January and early February a number of cost-cutting moves. The school is capping enrollment after seven years of explosive growth, now stymied by state budget cuts. It is closing four dozen academic programs, including fire-service management and music education. Along with those program cuts come the elimination of more than 200 faculty associate positions.”

I couldn’t find any other specific reference to Music Ed – I hope the article is wrong – or wrongly nuanced….

Here's a bit more ASU will close dozens of programs, cap enrollment

Is it possible that people really believe that artists don't have "jobs" worth protecting??? For what it's worth, my husband is a lawyer and the legal profession is being decimated with layoffs. It's everywhere.

ASU trumpet professor David Hickman weighed in on this at Forum: trumpetherald.com

Here's his quote:

"ASU is NOT cutting any of the regular performance degrees. The announcement from ASU has been widely misunderstood. Evidently, it cuts out an MM program that pretty much never has anyone enrolled in it, so all of the regular MM performance degrees are still going as usual.

Please help stop this misleading rumor.

Dave Hickman"

and this:

"We offer many MMs in performance (orchestral, solo, pedagogy, conducting, etc.). The one they cut was in musical theater conducting because no one ever majored in it."

Hopes this helps some.
