At a loss

Congrats! So glad it’s going to work out for you.

Since you’re going to have some expenses before college starts, start looking for a summer job. You’re going to need cash upfront to pay for books, dorm stuff, and to pay for things that your aid isn’t going to cover.

Franny–You’ve gone from extreme disappointment to executing a whole new option in less than three weeks! I’m incredibly impressed with that–that says so much about you.

That persistence and resilience will serve you well in the future. UCF is lucky to have you–congratulations!

Franny:

Congrats to you! As a graphic designer with 20+ years of experience, I’d like to give you some advice. Please make sure to take plenty of marketing courses even if they aren’t required. Understand social media as applied to marketing. Take as much computer programming as you can handle. Boring? Yes, but you need it. The reality of of our field these days is that you need to be a techie as will as an artist. Jobs in advertising and graphic design are hard to come by in this economy and having multiple talents will open doors for you. Work on your book. Take unpaid internships (lots of those) to build your book in the summer and on breaks. Bottom line, be flexible and know a little about a lot of areas. Good luck!!

Thank you all!!! I’m excited I can go to college in the fall now. Thanks for ur words of advice that helped me get through this.

@walker: thanks for the advice!!

@mom2collegekids: I’ll be commuting from home until I can raise money to move into my own place with a friend. I do need a job tho, pronto.

I am so happy for you, Franny! I just knew you had the tenacity to judiciously follow your dreams.

We are so fortunate to be under the advisement of all of these wonderful, wise parents on CC.

Franny,

Oh good. I’m glad that you have that option untill you get it all figured out.

Excellent news franny! Congratulations!!

Franny! I am so excited for you! You are amazing! I hope you know that you are going to a very good college, UCF has grown so much and it is a wonderful school. My daughter was accepted to UCF, and we live 10 minutes away from the school and she would have to pay very little to go there, but she is still leaning towards Rollins and $20k plus in loans. Sigh. I wish my daughter had your maturity. See…your hard work in high school did pay off! You made my day!

Great news, Franny. Congratulations for figuring out a workable solution.

I agree with all the others! A big kudo to you for turning on a dime and finding a solution. That attitude will carry you far in life.

Congratulations! You’ve shown amazing resiliency and initiative (not to mention willingness to take good advice!) that is going to serve you well in your future. Wishing you all the best.

I am so relieved that you were able to work something out! I, like several others, just read the whole thread and I was soooo hoping for a happy ending. lol My heart sure went out to you in your dissappointment. My daughter is just now starting to think about colleges and your story really brought home how important it is to try to look past the marketing, and the myths (which I don’t think I reeeeally believed were myths until I read your story) that the money will come if you are a good student. Thank you for sharing your story. I hope that UCF works out great for you!

Franny, I just wanted to tell you, I was talking with my husband and daughter about your situation, and my D decided that she wants to go take a tour of UCF. We only live 10 minutes from the campus and have driven around it several times, but she has never really seen it. A fried of ours that works there has offered a personal tour for her. I’m not sure if she will change her mind, she is pretty set on Rollins, but I told her to at least look at UCF. It will cost her almost nothing to attend there, whereas at Rollins she will have $28,000 in debt. I think hearing about your story may have helped her look at this a little more maturely than she had been, so thank you.

Franny, I knew you would get it together. Congratulations! You will go far in life, I know, with your flexibility, ability to grasp a situation and move quickly.

Piling on the happy congratulatory pile with more congratulations. Franny, the thing that makes me brag about my own kids is when they get knocked down…and then get back up, brush themselves off, and try something else. You’ve got a spine of steel and inner strength. Kudos to you–tell your mom that a whole bunch of other parents are really impressed with you.

Good job, Franny. I’m sendin ya the light for a great time, great opportunities, and a great career! So cheers!

hello all, sorry to boot up an old thread but i wanted to give you all an update on how i’m doing at UCF nearly a year after i created this thread and all you kind souls helped me during this moment of crisis in my life. i graduated high honors, 11th in my class, and i had enough AP credits that i was considered a sophomore by UCF. i got 3 local scholarships and 1 art scholarship from worldstudio aiga which helped me greatly this year. i moved to an off campus ucf affiliated housing, and with the extra money i had, i used to pay rent, as well as my mother being a surprisingly big help financially as well. our relationship is a lot better now that i’m out of the house haha. i think she sees me as an adult now, i don’t know. i made the dean’s list fall semester, even though i did get my first B since…middle school. (it was college algebra, it nearly killed me.) i also got nominated to join phi eta sigma and national society of collegiate scholars (though there’s no way i’m going to pay $95 to join that one.) this semester i’m already starting my art fundamentals since i’m already done with general education and i’m taking 3D art which i’ve never done before and it’s a challenge but it’s exciting. i love UCF, i thought i wouldn’t like a big school but i like that i am meeting new people every turn i take. although i didn’t get too close with any teachers last semester in my lecture halls, now that i’m doing my art classes and they are generally small, i am getting to know a lot of my teachers and they the same to me. i love sporting black and gold and i love being a knight! i’ve met some great friends here and i’m glad i chose UCF. new york can wait! i don’t have a job yet, but trust me, i’m applying! but yeah that’s an update on my life!!

Great update! Thank you for sharing.

This is one old thread I am so glad got bumped up. Congrats!

Franny!!! This is sooo great. I am happy that you are loving UCF. The cranky old fairy godmothers knew that you could do it <3

Well done, thanks so much for the update
