Hey guys, I was accepted to WashU as a transfer and received partial scholarship. Great right? well...problem is that I would be very very hard pressed to pay for whats left. Ive called the financial aid office several times and always get the same response " we have maxed out your scholarship". Im not sure how many on this board have experience with the WashU financial office, but is there any other angle I could approach? I really want to attend, and sent my enrollment fee because at the time it seemed like we could make ends meet..but its looking dim now. Should I continue to call and try to push or do I just have to pass up my chance to attend WashU?

Get a loan if it is worth it for you.

they told me the same thing until I called Bill Witbrodt, the director of financial aid. he was really receptive and basically gave me everything I asked for. though it might be too late now...

I experienced the exact same thing. WashU gave me only about $17,000 in transfer gift aid. They expect me to take out $7000 in loans, which I won't do.

The snowman, why do you think that it's too late, and when did you call Bill Witbrodt?

I cannot believe that Washu is this stingy. If they don't give me more money, then I will just have to stay at Emory.

Merely curious - vtoodler, why do you think you are worth more to WashU than the FA offered? What special talent will you be bringing to the WashU community? Are you just trying to meet your current FA from Emory or do you just want to graduate from a top school w/o any debt? If the FA package from WashU doesn't meet your needs and Emory's does, I would have to recommend that you stay there. BTW - was the 17K per year? If so, MANY students would love to have that package!

vtoodler,

I think that CopterMom is right on target. From what I remember, you applied and were not admited to WashU last year. All things considered, it seems that they are being quite generous, especially if the assistance is per year. If indeed you feel that your package at Emory makes more sense, then it is possible that your best option is to not transfer.

why did some transfers recieve scholarships and others not???

like how was that decided, not to sound pretentious, but some of the ppl that have recieved scholarships do not have "better" stats than me at all. Is it b/c i didnt apply for FA? I am really regretting not applying for FA b/c i have a feeling that wash u gives out merit money when "good" applicants do not get financial aid. At least, that seems to be the case for a few transfer students that applied for FA, and got scholarships.

Anyone want to enligthen me?

ST2 and Coptermom, you have a valid point. WashU's an amazing school, and going there with $$$ is an honor to most students. However, I need to clarify some things:

I was not rejected last year. Instead, I was waitlisted, and I didn't stay on the waitlist because of various reasons including money.

I'm seeking NEED-BASED FA, not merit-based FA. Let me tell you my story. My mother makes less than $35,000 a year. My father is dead, and my sister is in medical school. My mother is trying to help four children with that scanty income, and she is close to retirement age (almost 62) meaning that she won't be able to support me in a few years. Also, she suffers from tons of illnesses so I don't know how long she's gonna be around. I would love to go to WashU; WAshU is such an awesome school. However, I do not want to graduate with over $40,000+ in debt from undergraduate, and then take out MORE loans when I go to law school. Also, my full financial need was not met. My EFC is about $11,000 (money from my dad's insurance policy). If I do go to school at WashU, my mother would have to take out a second mortage on the house. Do you know how long it took her to pay for the first mortage?--decades

For this year, I actually have not gotten my FA package from Emory. Considering their generosity last year, I think that Emory's FA package won't be too bad this year.

Honestly, this is really tough because I REALLY want to attend WashU. I've wanted to go there for over a decade. But, I don't have the money to do it. To make matters worse, I have like 1.5 weeks to make my decision. To help, I've been applying to tons of scholarships, and I'm gonna work at the mall like crazy this summer. However, I'm still scared that I'll fall short. I heard of this thing called a PLUS loan, but my mother doesn't want to do it. So, it's like I'm stuck. This really sucks. On Tuesday, I will speak with an FA counselor at WUSTL.

ST2, you are EXTREMELY knowledgeable about WASHU--do you have any advice? Feel free to send me a private message.

BTW--I believe that I can bring a lot to WASHU.

On Tuesday, I'm also calling Missouri Department of Education to see if they have other scholarships for Missouri kids at Missouri colleges, besides the Charles Gallageher thingy.

vtoodler

Just sent you a PM with some suggestions. Hope that they are of some help.
