I have a question and thought someone on here might know! There was a very fast runner on my son's HS team who was accepted to an Ivy League college. On the team website, I found the news release talking about the incoming freshmen, and his name is on the list, which was surprisingly long. His times are probably a little better than average compared to the overall group. Then I clicked on "Roster," and only half the freshmen are listed there. Does that mean he didn't make the team at all? Would the other guys get to practice with the team in that case? I'm just surprised! Maybe he got injured or something.

Hi Maine,
Does the roster include a lot of info about each incoming runner? Is it possible they’re in the process of posting the freshmen and are waiting on them to fill out the info form? Might it be that the person posting the roster (probably a student on work-study) hasn’t had time to post all the kids?
It seems like XC rosters are unlimited in length! Some kids never run in a race all season for various reasons and still show up on the roster. I guess it’s also possible the kid changed his mind about running in college.
I say give it a couple of days and check back.
PS I’m glad I’m not the only one who is curious about where HS athletes end up and how they do in college :)

riverrunner is right. DD and the rest of the freshman will have their photos taken today. She called last night to get my input for her bio info that has to be turned in today. The returning roster members are already up on the site.

A school with many fall sports probably has a very overworked website administrator rushing to get all the info up - they probably work on things as they cross their desk (5 swimmers, 8 football players, 12 xc runners, etc…).

Thanks for the insight! I bet that’s what is going on.

riverrunner, I will definitely follow all the kids from our state! DS ran against and with so many of them! For the most part, a great bunch of boys.

It’s also possible that M.M. isn’t doing XC since he is really more of an 800m guy. I know that in high school every runner does both XC/track, but it really is much more specialized in college.

Some Ivies do not post their full, new rosters until well into the fall. Often students do not finish and submit the questionnaires, or miss picture day, so there are delays.

Currently there are many rosters including last year’s seniors, and no freshman yet.

^^
Have noticed this too
I have also seen some of the schools not list the freshman at all in the fall…

On the flip side, I have read some nice articles on the schools’ web sites that list each student-athlete, hometown, a little of the background etc…

Some schools’ rosters include head shots and others don’t include a photo of the freshman athlete all yr!

I have a confession- A couple of years ago, I finally emailed the webmaster and mentioned that it was February and nothing had been put up on my kid’s sport’s roster for the freshmen. I said we were from far away and the only way her family could follow the sport was the website. The articles were great, but when you’d follow the link to the athlete- nothing!

I also mentioned that prospective athletes were probably not very impressed by the website, and that for a school with a great reputation, this was looking pretty poor. Also there was no way for prospective athletes to compare their stats to the current class of freshmen, because there weren’t any posted. Within DAYS, the entire freshman class photos and bios were up and looking good. I have no idea who got in trouble over that, but my complaint got results…

^^
Exactly-- we did research the stats to see where kiddo fit…
One schools web site has a media guide that is several years old! When kiddo asked the coach about a current media guide and could one be mailed–kiddo was directed back to the web site!

CUlater, I hadn’t thought of that. I just figured he would do XC since he has for several years. If he can stay healthy, he’ll have a great running career ahead of him.

riverrunner, I’m glad the school webmaster listened to you! Those stats are so useful.

Their may be change in availability for current web based media guides and current web site info. The NCAA just changes its policy this summer regarding schools distributing hard copy media guides or school picture books to recruits. Going forward, these materials can only be distributed in digital form only. Don’t know the basis behind the rule change, it probably is to level the playing field between “rich” and “poor” schools and to make these materials available to all interested recruits, not just the highly ranked.

^^^bballdad - Interesting. This past spring, I learned that each family is only allowed one hard copy media guide. My daughter and I were each handed one by a coach while visiting her office, and I put my copy in my handbag, planning on browsing through it later. Then, when we were leaving the office, with my daughter holding hers, and mine in my bag, the coach stopped me and asked me to return the one in my bag as we were only allowed one, per NCAA rules. It was embarrassing and funny all at the same time! I felt like I had been caught “shoplifting” or some such thing! With the new rules, I guess this won’t be an issue anymore :)

Stickyfingers mayhew! ;-)

Mayhew–that is hilarious!

bballdad- interesting

We have been given muliple copies of the media guides while one campus–and its never come up.

In fact–I do know that while on one campus–We were registered for a tour–and there were tons of people without a reservation. We never got any of the materials–They literally went through several CASES! In the last couple of weeks- one arrived in the mail.

I can see colleges going more and more to digital rather than the expensive slick ones–All of that expense and postage. Still for them- its marketing.

As far as NCAA
Who tells a school HOW to market?
Already there is division about how D1 can recruit vs D3…
There already isn’t a level playing field for $, support, etc.
I should think the difference with the media guides etc already exists between divisions.

Where is the rule about 1 copy??

Like everything else the NCAA touches, its complicated and maybe made since in discussion, but the execution is problematic and of questionable value.
