Say that you are a pretty good varsity athlete with some small awards, some recognition, and team captain. However, you are not good enough to get recruited. Would this hold weight in Harvard adcom? Is it a EC equal to that of an academic EC other people spend their time in. BTW, the sport I play requires 3 hours of practice both in and out of season daily, so it takes up a lot of time.

I'm sure it would do something for you, as it shows leadership, dedication, teamwork, etc. etc. Frankly I don't think it matters a whole heck of a lot to the adcom what your ECs are so much as they show dedication and passion and enthusiasm and drive.

I think that you have good news/bad news. As an athlete...no you don't extra weight with admissions. Frankly, every school in the US has kids who are good/not great. Good news: What athletics have taught you, how engaged you have been can be a hook. We have two friends who interview for Harvard. They are two different types of people: one is a traditional professional, the other a successful artist. They have both said that they see kids with perfect SATs, 4.5 gpas every day. They look for something different...a musician, a film maker, a kid who started a business. Look to see why this makes you different....special ...and then you have your hook.

I agree with the view expressed by Phoenixy.

Thanks a lot.

Going into next year with 4 APs and the rest honors, I have to balance my schoolwork, extra ECs, and practice.

BTW, do you think that if my team wins division (CIF), it will be looked upon favorably?
