Go BEARS!!! First ranking at #3 since 1951!

The importance of this will differ from student to student and some schools may have alternate athletic “scenes” (meaning sports other than the biggies of football and basketball) that the student can enjoy, but there is no denying the positive energy and fun that can result on a campus when a prominent college team is performing well and drawing national attention.

I continue to believe that students applying to top colleges who want a great athletics scene have the self-awareness to understand how much of a factor this should be in their college search.

This is a fine thread as it is; it's always fun to discuss sports, and for some students it is important in where they elect to enroll. But I don't think it's necessary to build this thread up as one that is crucially important to the college search of this nation's elite young people, or to assert that it fills some gaping hole of unmet informational needs of prospective students.

Sometimes it's just fun to jabber about sports on campus. It's enough of a justification for the thread.

Did anybody see the Rice Owls on ESPN2 last night? They won their first game on the road in a thriller at Southern Miss (31-29).

Big weekend of college games coming up with some prominent matchups involving Division I (scholarship) colleges ranked in the USNWR Top 30, eg,

UCLA hosts Notre Dame
USC hosts Stanford
Duke hosts Wake Forest
U North Carolina hosts U Miami

Let the tailgates begin. :)

^ Missed that one. Southern Miss is pretty good too.

I'm hoping ND beats fUCLA.

All I know is that bears rule, trees suck =P

Holy Cross continues to get very good support-almost 12,000 last weekend not bad for a school of 2700. HC has tremendous alumni loyalty-alumni giving rate of 53%this past year. Duke continues to show improvement and could win a few more games this year.

Congrats to Illinois on beating #5 Wisconsin...3-0 in Big 10 for first time since 1990!

Question: What schools do you think have the best fight song? i*

I'd say:
USC (even if they play it ad nauseam)
Michigan
Oklahoma
LSU

usc can go to hades... those pretty boys suck cuz they cant even beat the nerds from palo alto mwahaha

^ LOL. For the first time I was rooting for 'furd.

Notre Dame's "Victory March" is the most classical and oft borrowed. Michigan's "Hail to the Victors" is the most rousing and proud.

go stanford!!!!!!!!!!
that was a SWEET win!

And Notre Dame beat UCLA. Today was not a good day for the PAC 10.

^ Nah, just for Los Angeles.

Even worse if the Angels get swept by Boston tomorrow.

Another wild and exceptionally fun day of college football. Great crowds and great athletic “scenes” including an impressive turnout for the Yale-Dartmouth game in New Haven (24,237). With temps approaching 80 degrees, the question is what was hotter-the weather or the home team which romped 50-10!

I had the headline all set up for the California Golden Bears. With a home victory over Oregon State, Cal would ascend to the top spot in the national collegiate football rankings FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 56 YEARS! But alas, it was not to be as Cal lost and this college football season is now unofficially the craziest that we have ever seen.

Among the USNWR Top 30, probably the most impressive result was Wake Forest’s defeat once again of Florida State. Granted, these are not the Seminoles of old, but little Wake (undergraduate population of 4332) is playing some big-time football and putting on a great athletic scene for a school its size.

Holy Cross is 3-1 against the Ivies this year. Like the Ivies, HC doesn't give athletic scholarships for football, so good showing for a small LAC. For over 100 years Holy Cross has played the Ivy League schools more than any other university. So much for Stanford and good crowd at Duke game.

Yesterday was mostly bright and sunny around the country and, in a season that has seen surprise after surprise, Vanderbilt now adds its name to the list of colleges that have upset a highly ranked opponent. Yesterday, in front of 79,212 fans, the Commodores defeated U South Carolina (USC in the South) by a 17-6 score. Even as I write this post, ESPN broadcasts that the party in Nashville continues….

Meanwhile, big crowds were on hand for some other notable games involving teams in the USNWR Top 30. The other USC went to South Bend and shellacked Notre Dame. And three of the publics had stellar outings. Congrats to U Virginia (4-0 in the ACC), U Michigan (officially back from the dead and now co-favorite to win the Big Ten) and UCLA (which is a funny team to figure out) made an impressive result yesterday over UC Berkeley before 83,494 at the Rose Bowl.
