Athletic Recruiting and Early Read

Has any athlete gotten an early read by Admissions so far for class of 2022? How long does it take to hear back from Admissions? In addition, how much pull does a coach at Wellesley have? I know Div 3 coaches do not have as much influence in admissions compared to Div 1. However, if someone were to pass early read, what is the likelihood of being accepted ED1?

If you are talking about an early read for a D3, it is too early for an official one from the admissions office for someone in the class of 2022. Most D3 coaches submit information to admissions office for an official early/pre-read in mid-July/August of the summer before senior year.

Perhaps a coach will ask for transcripts and test scores (although a class of 2022 wouldn’t have SAT/ACT or even PSAT scores for a few years), and he/she can make a basic assessment, based on their experience at the college (i.e., knowing the baseline grades and scores that are needed). However, this would not be considered a true early read. Depending upon the school, a D3 coach can have some influence on admissions, but I think you may be referring to the fact that many D3 schools (especially NESCAC, Liberty Leagues) have stringent academic requirements for their athletes and deviation from those standards is minimal, even for exceptional athletes. Lastly, I would say that for a D3 school, regardless of a positive early read or any ‘guarantees’ from the coach, admissions has the last and final say on acceptance and nothing is set in stone until the acceptance letter is received from admissions (whether that ED or RD).

II think the OP is referring to the college class os 2022, which means she’s a rising senior in high school. So she would have ready her GPA and most test scores. Otherwise I would agree with inquiringmom3.

I know this might be a little late, but I got an early read and it took about 2.5 weeks to complete. This was in August. Since they only take your test scores and high school grades/classes, they can only base you on that. Your essay can help/hurt your chances of getting in. From what I hear, the coaches at Wellesley don’t have much pull with regards to admissions. But, by applying ED1, you show commitment to the school and the readers should consider that.

Hi! So I committed to play field hockey at Wellelsey before senior year and I got a pre read done for me early July, right after I got my final sat scores back. It took her like a week to get it back, and the results were positive. To get a pre read, ask the coach and if he or she wants you as an athlete they will get one for you. As for academic pull it varies, I was the top recruit from my class so the coach was able to help me a lot more in the process, but sometimes it is not the case. I would say that normally sports only help solidify your application, so you should try to have sat scores and gpa on par with the school, and sports can secure you admission.
