What is an "early read"?

I have had a few coaches request my transcript and scores for an "early read". What exactly does this mean?

The coaches who have extended this offer have already seen my resume, so this must be a good sign, right?

An early read is a way for admissions to screen possible recruits to see if they meet the academic standards of the school. Coaches will meet with the admissions person for recruited athletes and give them the relevant information to help determine if the candidate is admissible. My daughter was asked for transcripts, test scores and senior class schedule. A couple of schools even asked for her school profile. Most coaches told her the pre-reads take 1-2 weeks. She spoke to the regional admissions rep from one school about the early read process and was told that they either give the coach a yay or a nay. Sometimes they will give a qualifier, as in admissible if they get their test scores up or something like that. The early read isn’t acceptance, it just gives the coach the go ahead to continue in the recruiting process. Good luck!

You also may request an early read as far as financial aid goes…for example, if you are concerned about FA packages prior to applying ED.

how much do you guys think improvement from sophomore to junior year helps? Or do they just look at the whole high school gpa?

Do they usually request early reads when you go on an official visit?
Don’t athletes report their test scores and stats to coaches via email anyway? The coaches know all that stuff when they update your profile and so can’t they just give that information to the admissions?

For the schools my daughter is talking with, early reads are required before the official visit offers are extended. Really, there is no point in a coach inviting a recruit for an official if the student will not be admitted. For the early reads, high school transcripts, test score reports, and senior class schedule were required, not just self-reported stats.

OH ok. That’s weird, I was offered an official before I even reported my test scores…for the test score reports, do you have to pay 10 bucks or so to send each one?

We just scanned the score reports we received in the mail. Eventually we will have to have them sent directly from the ACT, but for early reads, a copy of the official score report was fine.

What if you don’t get one in the mail? Like mine is only online…should I print and scan? Take a web picture?

On the ACT scores page there is an option to see a print version. We copied and pasted that and sent it for an update before we got the report in the mail. That should be ok to start.

For me, I told the schools myself of my scores… They said the print outs are kind of useless because they could be doctored.

I told them my scores, and said that if they needed confirmation of that, I could send the official report (they took my word)
