Is anyone aware of a college or university that recruits athletes for an unusual sport? Any examples would be most appreciated!!

Define unusual sport.

BYU, Cal, Arkansas State, Arizona State, Penn State, Colorado - Mens’ Rugby

Trinity - Squash

Fencing, sailing, skiing, squash are recruited at many of the Ivy League schools.

These examples that people are giving work for me! Thanks. I was thinking of “unusual” sports as those that don’t typically come to mind when one thinks of athletic recruiting.

You’ve come to the right place, Susanna.

While there are a few baseball folks here, and the occasional football and basketball question comes up, most of the discussion on this board surrounds the less conventional sports. There are a lot of rowing people here and fencing gets more than its share of discussion.

Few colleges recruit fencers, but those that do are disproportionally elite schools: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, Penn, Duke, Vassar, Haverford, Notre Dame are some, and there are more as well, including a few State schools. Scholarships are few and far between, but recruited athletes get huge admissions boosts.

If you want any specific information for your project, feel free to ask away.

Over the past year or so, there have been a few questions about cheerleading scholarships and cycling scholarships. Neither are NCAA sports, but certain schools do scholarship these athletes. University of Louisville scholarships cheerleaders and a handful of schools have cycling programs. Use the search function and I bet you can find these threads.

fencing has to be the winner. I love reading the fencing parents comments, what a great sport!

and so far the only school in the western united states that I’ve heard has a team is Stanford, which sounds like those quirky nuts over there!

san Jose state recruits for Judo, and has a very successful program.

skiing, downhill and x-country; equestrian (Dartmouth); synchronized swimming (Stanford); gymnastics, cycling, volleyball. Also, if you go to the NCAA site, you can find all kinds of unusual sports, e.g. bowling, rifle, women’s wrestling.

Cricket at Haverford!

Our family friend was recruited by and attended the University of Nevada, Reno, to be a part of their rifle team. UNR’s rifle team is really good, and she received a generous scholarship to attend the University.

Sorry I do not remember which college, but I have heard of someone being recruited for BOWLING.
Is Javelin unique???
Does any college recruit for Archery? What about Fishing?

What about Curling?
Surfing??
LOL

got my Varsity letter in college in pistol!
