at W&L due athletic recruits have a little bit of or any leeway when it comes to the admissions process? I know dIII schools dont give out scholarships, but say a d1 caliber baseball player was interested in W&L? could he get any help in admissions?

I have heard that athletes do not get admissions help, except for lacrosse players. The best thing to do, in your case, would be to ask the coach directly.

I believe athletes in every varsity sport get help. I know they do in football. Here’s a link to the W&L Common Data Set <a href=“Washington and Lee”>Washington and Lee;
Look at pages 8 and 9. There you’ll find average class rank and SAT/ACT scores for the current first-year class. If your son is at or above the 75th percentile, he probably doesn’t need any help getting in to W&L. If he’s between the 25th and 75th percentile, he might not get in without a “hook”. Being a great athlete is a hook. The better player he is, the closer he can be to that 25th percentile. If he’s below the 25th percentile, it’s unlikely he could be admitted even with the baseball hook.
I have very little idea how many recruits each coach can support, but my guess is that football gets 15-20, lacrosse maybe 5-7 (those are the only sports I have experience with as a parent). Maybe baseball would be in the range of lacrosse. That means the football coach might only be able to support a couple of guys at the bottom of the academic range and most are bunched right around the 50th percentile. And, MOST IMPORTANT, the coach CAN NOT guarantee admission. He can tell you something like, “of the 75 applicants I’ve supported over the past 10 years, only 3 were not admitted”, or something like that. The final decision always comes down to the admissions department.

My son was a top swim recruit this season and even though the coach wanted him very much, she was quite honest in saying he had to have SAT scores in the high 600’s to be able to support him. Academics come first at this great school. It is a beautiful campus in a wonderful location. My son decided to go EDI to Emory but W&L was at the top of his list. Just make sure your grades and scores are as high as possible. Good luck!

thanks guys! so it looks like athletes can get some help if theyre somewhat on the bubble!
