Does anyone have any recommendations for good schools with an athletic training program, i plan to go to undergrad for athletic training and then to grad school to get my doctorate in physical therapy. I just need some suggestions on good schools to apply to, so far my top choice is Boston University .

My goal, like i said above is to get my degree in athletic training and then go to grad school and get my doctorate in physical therapy, then after school i want to work for a college or professional sports team as an athletic trainer, and be able to travel and after that i want to open my own practice for physical therapy

A guy that was a lecturer at a camp I attended for Sports Medicine went to Physical Therapy school. He went to University of Texas for a Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology and then went to PT School and got a Masters of Science in Physical Therapy. He now works with college athletes.

While looking into Athletic Training, I would be sure to pick a certified program. If you tell me states that you’re looking at going to school, I can pull a list of the programs that are certified for Undergraduate Athletic Training by CAATE.

I also want to get a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training, and then most likely a Master of Science in Athletic Training.

Thanks Hookemhorns! Right now the main schools im looking at are Boston University, University of Michigan, University of Texas, Boise State and University of Washington ( although they don’t have a specific focus on athletic training, they do have a Kinesiology program i think) Would this make a difference if i wanted to become athletic trainer for sports team having my degree in athletic training or Bachelor’s of Science in Kinesiology ?

You’re very welcome. Feel free to PM me about anything related to the field and such. I’m not actually an Athletic Trainer, but I am definitely looking at it as a prospective career and most likely the path that I will take. I’ve done a lot of research that some people may not have done.

All 4 (UT, Boise State, Boston University, and UofMich) are accredited programs. I would honestly not attend University of Washington, if they do not have an Athletic Training major. It would most likely not make a difference, but there are a few things to consider. Being an Athletic Training major gives you the capability to work with athletes your Sophomore - Senior year, while a Kinesiology Major may not offer as much experience like that.

Of course I would pick the University of Texas out of all of those, but that’s just because I live in Houston, have been a huge Longhorns fan since I could understand football, and because the campus is beautiful and I’ve attended several camps there, most recently one based around Sports Medicine. With that being said, I think the top 4-5 students in the undergraduate athletic training program at UT (highest GPAs) have spots with a PT school. At camp we just got a bit of information about that, but nothing in detail. If you have any UT Austin specific questions, feel free to PM me about those.

James Madison University and George Mason University in Virginia that baronbvp mentioned are also accredited.

If you’re interested in this program, I’d honestly pick a place that has fairly good athletics, because in an Athletic Training major you’ll be working with athletes often.
