Athletics at Whitman

Anyone have experience with coaches and athletics at Whitman?

You might want to send a Private Message (PM) to Bogney, his son is on the tennis team.

Whitman seems to be putting more emphasis on athletics recently with great new athletic facilities. The tennis team has been nationally ranked for a long time and they are having an exceptional year this year - top ten in DIII. Both basketball teams have improved too. I don’t know much about the other teams, but have the impression that men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball are taken pretty seriously too. Baseball has not been very successful in recent years. Non-varsity athletes have excellent facilities for pick up games and intramural sports. There are a lot of outdoors activities nearby for students who are active but not into sports. There is also a new exercise facility, a new climbing wall, and a beautiful central playing field (Ankeny), so Whitman has lots of ways for students to get exercise and stay, or become, fit.

The athletics are D-III so there are no athletic scholarships, limits on team practice in the off season, number of matches, etc. Whitman is an academic school where athletes can still compete at a high level after high school. As far as I can tell, athletes are not cut any slack on the academic front except possibly with respect to scheduling of papers when the team is on the road, which is as it should be.

I recommend that any prospective athlete contact the coach and visit Whitman to spend some time with the team to be comfortable with the fit. It is a ton of work to handle the athletics and the academics, but it can be a great experience if the athlete fits into the team dynamic. The excellent facilities, competitive team, and chance to develop as an athlete as well as student were big draws for S when he was looking at colleges.

Thanks. Good info.
