Athletics: D1 Varsity v Club

As an incoming college freshman, I am wondering which is the best option for me. I want to have the coaches and seriousness of D1 athletics (Track and Field, Northeastern University) but my academics are my primary concern. Would there be a significant dropoff in seriousness and coaching from D1 to club? If I were to go into D1, I would be walking on with a decent shot of making the team.

Basically, I don't want to affect my academics if I don't need to, and if the effect is serious enough, I would be willing to sacrifice in quality of sport. Anyone that has been in a similar situation or has good knowledge of the topic?

yes

Only you can answer this.

Thanks. The first answered the second for me partially. My bad, I thought I layed out the correlation on what I think is best for me in the OP. Basically, its a time taken out of academics (missing classes for meets in particular) v quality decision. You answered the first, but not the second which is needed for me to decide. Do you have any idea or does it vary from school to school?

How much class you’ll miss is something only people on that team can answer. For example my D1 sport (which I think has competition structures similar to track) didn’t require I miss a single class. There are also conference differences too. For example ivy league basketball is only friday/saturday night in contrast to most (all?) other D1 conferences. You should try posting in the northeastern forum or contacting the coach.

Thanks!

What event in track is crucial…if it is distance then the coaches will most likely make you run practices in the fall with the cross country team (usually 90 miles a week). And or a few meets. Sooo with that said practices will usually soak up a lot of time that could be spent working on homework.
