Athletics

I knwo athletics are important to the academy. But my question is if we have to do high school sports or can we do club/marathons. And does a dedication to a particular sport matter?
Thanks

You can do whatever sports you want. However, long story short, the Academy rates Varsity HS athletics higher than anything else.

If you have demonstrated long-term devotion to a sport at the club level, say swimming, gymnastics, FENCING, I think the Academy might consider that on the same level as something like high school tennis or baseball. Most of the club sports go year-round,and especially if you have a history of tournament competition through sanctioned events, you'd be ok.

You can PM me if you'd like to hear about the wonderful world of fencing. :)

Thank you!

So as long as im involved in some physical activity? what if i start a high school sport late in the game or start a different sport from what i have been doing?

Thank you for all your help

Ivybound, (you are aware that USAFA is not an "Ivy", right?) ;)

My daughter didn't play a Varsity sport (due to the type of high school she attended) until her Jr. and Sr. year. It was always a topic of interest during interviews. I think what reflected well on her was the fact that she went out of her way--literally across town to another high school-- to fit sports in. When asked why on earth she did it (because that made THREE schools that she had to travel to each day) she always said, "Well, I know the Academy looks highly upon Varsity sports." It seemed they liked the fact that 1) she was aware of admission criteria and 2) she was doing all she could to be the well-rounded person they were seeking.

Just do your best to meet the criteria they desire. That's all you can do.

Good luck! :)

flymom- yes i am aware that USAFA is not an ivy haha , I am choosing to attend a college that will allow me to contribute more that just a degree to this nation-my service. I appreciate your response and I will do all i can to become more well-rounded. Thanks so much! :)
