Few Q's about the USAFA?

If I was involved in volleyball and swim my first yr. of high school, but then was unable to compete the following years because i was also taking classes at a junior college, will they look negatively upon my application because of the lack of athletics even if im still shape and what not?

Also, Im graduating a year early from high school (i have more than enough credits and a sufficient gpa) will they look negatively on early grads?

Thank you so much!

Athletics are always good to see, but why would they look down on early grads? Shows ambition if you ask me.

As long as your old enough, early grad shouldn't be a problem.

Ok thanks! The only reason why i Thought that early grad. might look bad is because they only get to see 2 years of work before they make a decision.

Ivy, how old will you be on June 24th?

I'll be 17

IVY Guy4Christ (G4C) was pretty young when he entered. I believe 17 as well. NOt sure if he was an early grad.

we have one in our squad who turns 18 next year O_O

(early grad)

Ok thats good. Can anyone help me with my athletic question i posted as well?

have you practiced for your CFA?

yea im good in that aspect. My question is this: will my having only been involved with freshman sports be a determining factor to my application? because i was unable to participate because i took alot of classes at a junior college after school and the two conflicted.

Wow! 2 years... That is awesome. The only problem I may see with that is lack of diversification of sciences and math. They want to make sure you've taken the sciences and higher level math that will be required to take at the AFA... What sciences have you taken?

And with the sports... I myself do not do any organized school athletics. But I do other physical activites outside of school that are team related. They just want to make sure you can handle not only school but also sports and other activites that subtract from the time you have for homework and such, while keeping your grades up.

SemperExcelsius- Im actually graduating after 3 years, not 2, of high school.

And, if you dont mind me asking, what physical activities did you do outside of school? I really would like to know, seeing as i want to be as qualified as possible.

And as for the sciences and math, I will have taken up to Honors Pre Calc/ Trig and I will have completed: bio, chem, anatomy and possibly advanced physics.

Thanks for the help!

Ivy the Academy looks at sports for leadership, commitment, and physical ability. It is important to them and that is why most cadets will have lettered in at least one sport, but do not let ths discourage you. There are Cadets Male and Female who did not participate in HS Sports. They may have chosen Martial Arts or a Club sport or none at all. It may delay a decision until the mass mail in March.

That said you really do want to have something to show them. Athletics are important for a few reasons.

Wasn't hornet some sort of martial arts student in high school, but not a HS athlete per se? He might be able to help you there, since he's, like, all-knowing.
And wasn't he working as an EMT for the blood drive (on a separate note)?

Ivy,

I can tell you approximately 80% of the cadets here lettered in at least one sport during high school. The 20% who did not were probably involved in a non-sanctioned sport like martial arts etc. In addition, I would guess those who did not letter were probably stronger on the academic side. If you are above average academically (which it sounds like you are) and you are involved in some sort of athletics outside of school, you should be fine.

HG was a TKD champ and is an EMT as well.

(Gotta love those acronyms...)

Haha thanks guys! Im goign to certainly take your advice and maybe do a club sport over summer, (when i have more time), I did play volleyball and swim (JV) freshman yr

oh and also, will maybe organizing a team sport, such as volleybal or something, for the community that i could coach be a could option because then i will demostrating athletics as well as leadership?

lol, petko

ivybound, if you can organize a sport, that sounds good to me :)
