Attaching a resume

Hi all,

I'm using the CommonApp and i was wondering if attaching a 5-page r

Good lord … 5 pages!

O_0 WOW!!!

Yes it will most def annoy them! 1 page at most!

I think you need to re-evaluate what you find important to show to admissions officers. The average reader has a few minutes to look at you entire application. While you won’t necessarily get rejected for having a 5-page resume, it will both not allow them to read your entire application, and also annoy them at having to read such a long resume.

In short, yes, a 5-page resume is waaaay too long. Cut it down.

How does an 18 year old have a 12 page resume? Your intent is not to write an autobiography.

I would discourage you from including any attachment at all. If you are having trouble finding anything to cut from a 5 page resume, then it is likely that all of it is equally worthy of omission.

There is an old adage, “The thicker the file, the thicker the student.”

Thanks for the advice everyone. It’s just because I’m a pianist and I’m trying to include a (very small) selection of my more important concerts, charity events and awards that represent a larger number of different nations and occasions I’ve played in… I’d say about 45% of my current 5 pages is devoted to music. Will try to cut in down further.

Maybe consider doing a separate attachment for your performances? A 5 page resume, for anyone, is obnoxious.

As a gallery artist, what I did is make a CV instead of a resume, so I basically just have a list of all my art-related gallery shows/exhibitions/awards/publications/etc. It’s only about a page long because I included the most important and relevant ones. I didn’t really include information about any of it, just listed them and hyperlinked to the websites of some galleries or publications if the adcoms really cared to learn more about them. I’d suggest something similar for you. Good luck!
