Attaining leadership roles in a top-tier high school

Colleges look for students that demonstrate leadership capabilities, and many students do this by assuming leadership positions in school clubs. I am enrolled in a vocational school that is ranked in its STEM education. Therefore, competition for leadership roles in math and engineering clubs, which are the clubs that coincide with my strengths and interests, is especially intense. I face the reality that I may not be adept enough at these subjects to compete with other candidates for leadership positions. Are my circumstances a positive for me, as it provides an excuse to demonstrate leadership through other (easier) means, or is it a disadvantage?

You are making the common mistake of conflating leadership with leadership positions; AOs will not make that mistake. Group members can be leaders without having a title, and some club presidents suck as leaders. What’s more important is how your leadership comes across in your essays and recs.

Have you a chance to give back to others, for example, tutoring your peers at your school, or younger kids in the neighborhood? In your essays, do talk about what you have learned from these ECs; art of teaching; joy of watching your students learning; communicating with others; seeing the connections between math and science to other sectors of society…
