I am currently attending a CC and am going to be transferring in the fall and am currently weighing my options. I applied for a few UCs and a CSU, and am considering going to a CSU to since it will be cheaper, and then proceeding to a UC to pursue my graduate work. Will I be at a disadvantage when it comes to being admitted to a graduate school if my undergrad work was done at a CSU, or any other significant disadvantages to speak of? I know completing my undergrad at a UC will carry a little more weight, but is it entirely worth it if I plan to proceed to graduate school?
I am a Computer Science major, I currently have a 3.94 GPA, and would like to continue on to graduate program to earn a Masters or perhaps a PhD.
Is there anything else I should look into if I decide to continue on this route, or any other general information that will be helpful?
Thanks!
There should be no big penalty for doing your BS at a CSU as long as you do all the right things to prepared for graduate school. Also if the CSU is SJSU, it is quite well known for CS already and that is an advantage. Just make sure that you get involved in research and take the most demanding curriculum possible.
I will probably be attending CSU Channel Islands if I go that route simply because of the proximity. I will probably just end up waiting to see what schools accepted me before making any final decisions.
Also, are there any other things I should be looking into to help me make the right decision?
What I think you should look at is which school will give you the best opportunities. By opportunities I mean the chance to conduct research, gain experience through internships, the chance to excel in your classes, and more interaction with your professors. I’m applying to graduate schools right now and I’m confident I’ll at least get into one of my schools. My department sends a lot of people to grad school, and I attend a regional university.
