I’m very close to finishing junior college, but I’ve been looking to got to college out of state. Reason being is because in South Carolina the only colleges that offer CS is USC and Clemson and I believe attending college out of state would provide me with a better opportunity. I still decided to apply to Clemson, but is it a good idea to attend college out of state for the possibility of getting good job opportunities? Also with me having an arrest record that’s been expunged will that affect my chances?
Hi–
If your arrest record is expunged then it should not show on your permanent record. It’s nil. Check with the courts to see if it’s expunged or not. If it is, there’s no need to mention it IMO. Others on this forum may correct me, but I believe that expunging generally is the reward for staying law-abiding since the arrest.
As far as job ops outside of your state, that is unclear because it depends on 1) where you go to school (another place with low opportunities but still out of state? Or some place that’s got good connections to the CS industry?) and 2) the sort of person you are. Scrappy, smart, capable people who can hustle up opportunity will do just that regardless of where they are placed. More passive people who are afraid to take on opportunity will be that way even in the midst of huge opportunity and they won’t do as well.
So – assess your qualities realistically.
Also talk to the CS program at Clemsen – it’s probably set up well.
If you’re interested in transferring to CS programs out of state with ties to the industry, you may want to consider –
- Santa Clara (located in Silicon Valley)
- University of the Pacific (located the next valley over, but with coop ties to SV)
- U of Washington
- RPI; WPI; RIT; Stevens Institute of Technology; Rose Hulman; Case Western;
- Union College
- Canadian schools such as Waterloo (if they take transfers)
etc.
Are they’re any public colleges that have good connections with the CS industry?
How will you pay for these out of state publics or private universities? Are they affordable for you at $50,000 or way more per year?
You have a great couple of instate options that might be affordable…are they?
Make sure that you can afford to pay for these expensive out of state schools before you get your heart set on going there. Many provide very limited aid to transfer students.
The schools listed in post 1 do not guarantee to meet full need for all.
I understand that, but if I’ll have a better chance at getting a job wouldn’t that be a better option? As I said I have a record now. Doesn’t that mean that colleges in my state are going to see that now?
If your record was expunged then no one sees it.
If it is visible to your instate schools, it will be visible to OOS schools too.
Your job options out of Clemson will be fine.
Job applications (outside law enforcement or national security type stuff) are NOT allowed to ask “Have you ever been arrested”?
They can ask “Have you been convicted”?
If your record is expunged or you have juvenile offender status, you can answer the convicted question with a “NO”.
Its like getting a speeding ticket. Sometimes the judge says “If you don’t get any moving violations for a year, your ticket is dropped.” You pay the fine, but your licence is clean. Ask me how I know;)
disclosure: I am not a lawyer
Get in touch with the CS departments at the two in-state universities and ask what their job placement for CS has been. I suspect you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
Pleasantly surprised how? Because I have a record now?
By the way even though I’m considering Clemson over USC I was going to apply to Washington State, but even though my arrest got expunged I believe its gonna affect my chances of getting into any of these schools.

Do well at Clemson and you’ll be fine. According to the website…
“Ranked one of the top-10 supercomputing campuses in the country, Clemson offers computer science majors a unique opportunity to collaborate with computing specialists and faculty. Our nationally recognized faculty hold a variety of research interests and experience across industry and academia.”
Ok. but how will I get in now that I have a record?
If your record was expunged, it’s like it never happened. There is no record. So you can apply anywhere you want.
I don’t understand why you think your chances if getting a job are better if you attend an out of state school. Clemson is an excellent school with an excellent job placement record.
Unfortunately, it is NOT like it never happened. Some government forms and applications will require you to the arrest and incident forever. It doesn’t mean you won’t get the job or the form approved, but you will have to disclose it. A security clearance, for example. There is a government form for foreign adoptions that requires ALL charges, no matter how little, be disclosed and if you don’t, and they find out, you are then banned for more than a year.
The OP should now how to answer the questions. Where you ever arrested? Where you ever convicted? What was the outcome of the incident (deferred judgment, expunged judgment, lesser charge).
This doesn’t mean you won’t get into college, in SC or other states. You have to answer the questions.
you can attend any college and move to the town you want to settle, finding job there.
You will be pleasantly surprised by the job placements CS majors from Clemson have.
And this has nothing to do with you having a criminal record that has been expunged.
@twoinandone I’m not planning on nor did I say anything about a government job/security clearance so why even say that?
Contact your lawyer and ask how you answer these questions if your record has been expunged.
I don’t have a lawyer so please stop talking about a lawyer.
You wrote the above today.
You wrote the above a couple of months ago.
So…are you currently working on your associates degree…or are you in a four year program working towards your bachelors?
What year in college are you? If you are finishing “junior college” that would imply that you are a second…maybe third year college student.
But you got arrested for a misdemeanor when you were twenty? Not convicted. Arrest expunged.
ETA…and supposedly you were a second year community college student in 2014.
Something isn’t adding up here.
