It seems like every time I do a college match search on any college-matching website, multiple CUNY’s come up. Hunter college is probably the one I see the most.
I’ve heard though that attending an out of state public university is pretty dumb unless it’s a very presitigious one. And it seems like 99% of CUNY students are from New York. But I would very much like to live in Manhattan for college, and so far NYU is my only other good match in the area. (Pace is also a decent match for me.)
Any thoughts on this? I plan to major in something Psych related - do they have a decent program for this? Will being out of state decrease my chances for admission? For financial aid? Is the school worth traveling out of state for?
For Hunter College, I think it more like 4% OOS. Hunter is a well respected College in the New York Area, especially their Nursing and Science-related programs. With a OSS Tuition of only $12K, it is viewed as one of the Best Colleges for the money (2011).

It is a good alternative to NYU, where the Tuition alone if over $48K (4X). Hunter College is located in Midtown Manhattan and as such, offers everything a student looking for an Urban environment. Other alternative CUNY Colleges are Baruch College (located closer to NYU in lower Manhattan), City College of New York-CCNY (Upper Manhattan), Brooklyn College (located in Brooklyn with a very beautiful campus) and Queens’ College (Located in the Borough of Queens). All these CUNY Schools have a sizeable Psychology Department. Hunter, Baruch. CCNY, Brooklyn College and Queens College have dorms available. CUNY 4-years Colleges consistently shows up on the list of the “Best Value Colleges”.

@Psata82 Thank you! This was super helpful
You may WANT to live in Manhattan, but doing so will put you quite a bit in debt. You won’t really find an apartment for less than 2k a month and there really aren’t dorms. The students are from NY, because they live with their parents during college to save money on dorms. Studying psych for undergraduate also means you won’t be making a college grad’s salary until you finish master’s, at least. Why don’t you consider Westbury, Farmingdale and Purchase SUNY schools where you can visit Manhattan on the weekends, unless you have family that you plan on staying with.
