hello, as stated, this question is for all canadian students.

i am an american student aiming to come to a bunch of schools in canada (mcgill, uoft, queens, etc). i posted here cause it is the most populated canadian section :p

anyway, i would like to know the admissions process considering GPA. i actually visited UofT and Queens, and they stated that grades from grade 12 are the only ones that count. grades 9 and 10 are pretty much useless, and grade 11 is based for early admission. i do not believe that this is true at mcgill, but for many other canadian schools (UBC, UofT, Western, Queens, and such), is it? their websites are a little misleading, so i would like to ask a canadian student who knows about this for a fact.

thanks a bunch!!

*btw, this is for american students coming to study in canada, so im guessing the admissions process is a little different

thanks for the reply, but is it true that grades from gr12 are the only true ones that matter? gr11 is basically determining if you get an early acceptance. in my particular case, my gpa in gr11 was around 2.2, but my gpa in gr12 (will) be 3.8.

SATs, scores have not come back yet but i assume it will be around 2050.

student: most canadian universities don't look at grade.11 marks. If I were you, I would focus more on your SAT scores, as your grade 12 GPA is certainly good enough to get you into McGill

There isn't one Canadian school that I know that takes into account grade 11 marks. UofT claims to do it if you're on the borderline, but a 3.8 gpa doesn't look like you're on the borderline.

Yes, I did. I don't know diddly squat about the private school system. I would assume there is as much variation within it as the public school system. The only private schools I know anything about are Upper Canada College (and only the sex scandal), The York School and University of Toronto Schools, all of which are in Toronto and pretty elite.

Student1: Yes. Even if I'm wrong, I doubt your 3.8gpa is gonna hurt you. Whether you get admitted early or not shouldn't be a big deal.

I don't know why people think a gpa of 3.8 can get into mcgill? Taking into account grade inflation, that is below an 80% average. In the cdn highschool system a 4.0 is 80% and above. A 3.8 in an american system is high 80's/low 90's but if you translated that into the cdn system it would probably be about 10% lower which is not good enough to get into McGill. But maybe they won't take this into consideration? But the cutoff grade for them is usually around 87%.

but on Mcgill's website they clearly state that they take into account grades from 10,11 and 12 for American students.

anyone have any input? Do they just say that to make us feel better and in reality only take into consideration 11 and 12 marks? In my case, I'd be mroe than glad if it's true. I performed quite poorly in 10th, but have picked it up 11th and 12th.

a 3.8 translates into about a 96%. we are on different grading scales. they arent going to compare canadian gpas with american gpas until they are on the same scale. a 3.8 is a very good gpa.

no it doesn't....with that reasoning a 4.0 would be an average of slightly lower than 100%. They won't compare it with a cdn gpa but a LOT of americans who are applying to mcgill will have a 4.0. I'm saying if you wanted to convert a 3.8 american gpa into a cdn gpa it would be a lot different that is all. But like I said above, McGill is all about numbers. So they may not even bother. They might just look at it in terms of percentage and say 'fine'

i'm still not clear if its exclusively gr12! it doesn't really make sense, because how can they judge your entire highschool on a single semester? i did horrible junior year, so i am really hoping this "different admissions process" is true.
