i haven’t visited au yet… what can you tell me about the campus?

We visited in the summer. We all liked it. It had a suburban / urban feel, but a defined "green" campus (unlike GW). The biggest drawback was the lack of a viable commercial area or subway stop directly adjacent to campus. I believe it is only about a 20 min. walk, however. The surrounding neighborhood is quite nice.

IMHO...lacking...but i guess it is hard to compete with G-town's--the surrounding area is nice as in upper in class if that esp. appeal to you----there are green spaces but they aren't developed into neat areas fountains, statues, neat lanscape, etc--they are just grass

I spent about two weeks up at American for a summer program and feel pretty familiar with the campus. It definitely has an enclosed feeling even though it is part of Washington; you won't be crossing any streets to get to class like at GWU. It is fairly self-contained since most of the surrounding area is filled with expensive homes and embassies (the first of which I would consider to be a negative, but the second of which offers great opportunities). Also, it is not near the Metro, so it may be more difficult to get to places in the heart of downtown. Overall, however, I would say if you're looking for a suburban feel on what is truly an urban campus, this is an excellent location and isn't too far from the real Washington.

How do most students get transportation downtown? Is there like a bus to head to the metro or do student drive downtown (seems unlikely)?

bravesboy,

The metro is only a 10 minute walk from the campus. There is a shuttle to the metro as well.
